What do surfers wear?

I'm writing a novel and one of my characters is a surfer. I've been out of the game a little while and need to know what they wear and some of the phrases they might uses like "stoked" , especially what they say when they are going surfing. Ex. "riding the tubes"

Update:

Just wanted to let you know, I lived with hardcore surfers about 10 years ago and was a body surfer myself. I know how they talked then. They definitely didn't say anything like "cowabunga". Just a few new slang terms they use now would be great. Anything new in the last 10 years.

Surfers wear wet suits when the water is cold. I've been known to wear board shorts, and any type of swimming trunk. Also sometimes, surfers will wear nothing when they are taking a shower. Every once in a while I like to wear a spring suit.

When surfers are NOT in the water, they tend to wear clothes that cover up their bodies, since it is illegal to walk around naked. I have many hardcore surfer friends who wear t-shirts and jeans. Also going around barefoot is not a good idea, so my hardcore surfer friends wear shoes. Shoes protect the feet.

Also they say stuff like "top of the morning" "i'll be gosh darned!" and "your on the trolley!"

Why are you asking dumb questions?

Well, I have been surfing for 45 years, so I guess that makes me a surfer. I am almost 60, and i dress like any other 60 year old guy does.

There is one thing that most real surfers hate is being stereotyped. We are identified by how we surf, not what we wear, or what slang we we use.

I surf with Doctors and lawyers, cops, carpenters, high school students, stoners, landscapers....There is no common denominator other than we love the surf. Give me a break, will you. If you want to write a novel about real surfers, don't imagine them to be anything like Jeff Spicoli. If you want to keep up to date on surf jargon, but a surfing m,magazine.

Sorry if I sem abrupt, but stereotyping us makes surfing look like the sport of morons rather than the sport of kings.

Billabong, Hurley, Quiksilver, O'Neil, Volcome, etc. Shirts; denims or any kick back looking pants; autos, Globe, DVS, or DC shoes; any surf hats; same type hoodies. We additionally placed on Surfboard type cloths. I somewhat have a Channel Island Surfboard so I very own a pair of CI shirts. ^no longer all surfers stay in heat climates the two, think of roughly Northern Cal and the Nothern EC.

    Boogeyboarder?

Learn to surf before you try to understand our culture; outsiders usually get it VERY wrong

try and keep surfer slang a little bit. i guess shorts and a long sleeve shirt, and sandals.

dont make him say stupid things like "cowabunga" and "dude", try to keep it classy and make him/her say things based on your characters personality.
