Because the Marx Brothers were Hollywood capitalists. Kinda went against Ol' Karl's beliefs, but I bet he would have been a saucy Ol' chap if he did! Just something about the wild looking beard and, the broken English in a German Accent would have made him a funny character.

In the beginning of their Hollywood years it was due to contracting issues with Paramount. But when they left Paramount, Harpo, Chico, Groucho and Manifesto (which was Karl's stage name) teamed up for their first MGM release, "A Day At The Kremlin."
