Why do so many people here believe the proper word to use is "MATHS"?

I haven't been in school for many years. Is this something new or just an epidemic?

Neither. It's just the way "mathematics" is abbreviated in every English speaking country but ours and maybe Canada. The way we say "stats" for "statistics".

It's been 'mathematics' historically, but is usually shortened to maths or math as slang. Hence why a mathematician is called such, they aren't called a mathsian!

The word "Maths" is a contraction of the full word "mathematics". In USA the contraction is usually "Math".

Strange to assume that the way you're used to is the only correct way. "Maths" is every bit as correct as "math".

I've wondered the same thing myself. I have often been tempted to write and tell them that it ain't "kosher".
