What are some reasons why I can't restore my computer to an earlier date?

I am running windows 2000 and am experiencing some anomalies in my internet use. I decided to restore my computer to an earlier time and date to see if that solved the problem; however, no matter which restore point I choose, I get the msg that restore was unable to restore to that point. What are some reasons why this might be happening?

Update:

Computer ER: thanks for a most unhelpful answer and attitude. I'll bet you work in an IT department providing customer support.

Update 2:

I find it interesting that people who have no solution to my problem feel constrained to make some sort of comment to show how wise or technologically advanced they are. To me it is just a sign of their ignorance and lack of ability to behave with any kind of grace or consideration.

I would suggest finding a spyware killer on the internet but be careful because some spyware programs that are advertised that are not known usually have spyware in them so find a good one. Also if you have a windows CD try repairing your computer with it or that all depends on your type of windows though. I suggest backing up important data to a CD just in case things get ugly.

What you need to restore is time to make this antic work.Look at the garbage there is a good chance you'll find a 4-5 years old computer there.
