Confusing crochet directions?

1st round (row): Chain 3, then skip the next 2 spaces and shell (5dc's) in the next ch space. Continue shell stitching until you reach the last 3 chains. Then finish your last shell and slip stitch into the 3rd chain of beginning chain 3.

This will complete the first row in the round.

2nd round (row): Now ch 3, then work 1 dc in same chain space (counts as first HALF shell) then *sc into THIRD (3rd) chain of previous rows ch 5 shell. Work shell (5 dc's) into next sc of previous row* Continue around until you reach the last sc into previous rows shell, then work 2 dc's into last chain space.

In Row 2, when it says to work the shell into the next sc of previous row....?

Update:

yes i am aware that the 5 dc's are the shells, and that they need to be worked in the previous rows sc...... but in row 1 ( previous row) i dont see any sc's????? maybe its a typo? if so.... im not so sure that making a shell in every dc shell would be....!?!?!? ughhh

Update 2:

... i thought that the "shell stitching" was just the 5dc in every 3rd chain... lol..... this pattern dont really have any abbreviations at the top or bottom of it.......

Shells take up more than 1 chain so usually are worked every 3-4 chains with a sc in between. The instructions in 1st round say "continue shell stitching" I am guessing that somewhere before the instruction begin, probably under abbreviations, there are instructions for doing "shell stitching" which would include some sc which are mentioned in the 2nd round.

All repliers seem to be confused by this so it seems to be something in the pattern rather than something you are doing.

Is the pattern in a book. In that case they do not give abbreviations or special stitch instructions at the beginning of every pattern. They are listed on a page at the beginning or end of the book. Check the index for the page they are on.

Good luck I hope someone solves your problem for you.

Hmm...Can you post a link? This makes no sense to me at all. Off the top of my head, a 5 dc shell stitch would be something like this:

round 1: Ch3, 2dc in same st, skip two chains and * sc in next stitch, skip next 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, skip next 2 sts* repeat around ending the row with 3dc in last ch.

round 2: ch1 sc in same st, 5dc in next sc, sc in third dc of next cluster around.

I think that's right. It would make a solid work. I have also seen shell stitch done in an open pattern with a row of clusters alternated with a row of chain stitches.

    Good luck.

row 2: 5dc where they tell you to make more shells. the 5dc is the shell stitch in this pattern.
