I am gonna give you the classic law school reply: IT DEPENDS. The big question is : what kind of gamer are you? In other words, do you play video games enough to make it worth the money you fork out?
Here is an analogy: I have Netflix bc it is a better deal than having premium cable channels or going to the movies. Anyone who has had a Netflix membership can tell you the new movies are booked WAY in advance. In other words, you are going to WAIT for new titles. I presume Gamefly has the same drawback.
Why does that make any difference? Because game prices drop fairly fast. I love gaming so I do subscribe to gaming magazines and I read reviews. I know which games I really do want to own. I wait until the prices drop and then I buy once I am comfortable with the price I am paying.
Check out what you pay as a member of Gamefly. I believe it is about $16.00 for one game at a time, or about $23.00 for two games a month. Considering I am going to be stuck waiting anyhow, it isn't too long of a wait for me to buy a game on amazon or ebay or half.com at a reduced price. The other advantage to waiting is that the bugs have been exposed and (hopefully) patches have been released when needed. If I want a game sooner I can buy it on steam or impulse or gamersgate.
By the way - you should know that Gamefly is not the only good game rental service. There is Gamerang (with higher ratings than Gamefly) and Gamemine. (Just to let you know there are options).
Other factors:
I am pretty picky about my games. I can go months on end without seeing a game that appeals to me. I would very likely be putting out $16.00 when there isn't a game I really want to rent. I also happen to like a lot of Indie titles that are not as expensive as the mainstream titles and would be a waste of a rental.
Another personal thing - I like to go back to replay my games. If I find a game I really enjoy, I am going to want to own it. With games like Mass Effect (and sequels) I often buy the DLC. I might be able to buy that at a discount, too. Gamefly does have a purchase option but you don't end up saving much that way.
It all depends on YOU. If you live with your family and have plenty of money to burn, that is another important factor. I have to watch what I spend. I have friends who HAVE TO have a game on the day it is released. Then they fly through it and trade it in at Gamestop (where they get ripped off - but who am I to judge?) Some people trade games with friends.
Gamefly offers a 30 day free trial. (You MUST USE A SPECIAL COUPON CODE to access the 30 day free trial, otherwise you only get a free ten day trial). Check google for the special code. Free is always good! You might try out Gamefly first to determine if it fits your gaming style. From what I read, you can also cancel any time so the risk is minimal. Good luck!

Gamefly is a little expensive, but it's by and large the most convenient way to rent games. You get a new game approximately 3-5 days after sending one back, now that they have more warehouses around. Membership also gives you access to free shipping on any used games, as well as discounts and coupons after you've been a member for a while. It's fast, reliable, and they almost always have any game in stock. (Just be sure it's the only thing on your list if it's a brand new game. They may get it back in from someone tomorrow, but if they don't have it immediately, they'll send you the first thing on your Q that they can immediately send out. Don't get too caught up in the complaints. You just need to use that trick, and the games will be sent out in a few days. Just get the 2 game plan and you'll never be wanting for something to play.) Overall, it's the best mail-rental service.
By the way, if you haven't used someone's referral code already, consider using mine. It benefits me as well as giving you an extra month of gamefly. http://a.tellapal.com/a/bU8zZl

I can't really say whether GameFly is worth it or not, but based on about 1.5-2 years of membership, I can explain the pro's and con's.
PROS:
- A pretty darn wide variety of games are available, for every console in this and last generation.
- Pricing is very good, even for the two-games-out-at-a-time membership, that's two games a month for around $15. Simply beautiful.
- Overall, the process of setting up your GameQ is really easy, and the entire service is really convenient.
CONS:
- Yeah, there's a wide variety of games, but the quantity of each game is very limited. If a game came out recently (i.e. the last six months or so) and is still popular, don't get your hopes up, even if you put it as #1 on your GameQ for weeks and weeks and weeks.
- At least where I live (about 300 miles from the closest shipping center), it takes about a WEEK to receive a game after sending in your last one. Sometimes even longer. It's a good idea to keep your games for as long as you can because of this, just returning it after a couple of days will be a huge waste of time.
Make of those pro's and con's what you may, decide for yourself whether or not it's worth it.

depends.
i buy games. but only get the ones i know i really want. so i dont rent much.
if you aren't buying games, and plan on doing a LOT of renting, then gamefly is absolutely worth it.
but if you are like me, and do morebuying than renting, then no, gamefly is not worth what you will spend.
