Free Drawing Softwares?

Hello,

I'm an engineer, and I often need to make simple drawing for papers I write. I have been using MS Paint to make these drawings in the past. However Paint forces the user to manually draw objects by hand, which makes it difficult to draw objects exactly to scale.

What would be helpful for me was if there was some software that allowed the user to numerically specify the dimensions and the position. For instance when drawing a rectangle, the software could prompt for the (x,y) position of the lower left corner of the rectangle and the lengths of the rectangle in the x and y directions. Does anyone have any recommendations for free drawing software that could satisfy my needs?

Thank you,

Kevin

Update:

Paint.net is like a godsend. Thanks! I'll choose you as the best answer as soon as it lets me.

Not sure about x,y directions but there are many free softwares that compares itself to photoshop like GIMP, Paint.Net, and so on...

If you are a student, you can get a discount off of photoshop (a huge one, to say the least).

Source(s): Has both GIMP and Paint.Net
