Son starting solids: could he be allergic?
Hi,
My doctor said I could start giving my son cereal in the morning now and so I made the rice cereal and started giving it to him with his normal bottle in the mid-morning. He had no problem with the swallowing off the spoon but he didn't like the taste of it which she said can be quite common...So I started him on Oat Cereal 3 days ago and - success! He loves it and today finished his whole bowl (I'm still only making half of what the side of the box says but still) I have noticed though that he has gotten the runs a couple times though after eating...
Does this mean he is allergic or is his body adjusting to the new food?
If he is allergic what should I feed him instead?
He has no other signs of allergy: (eg. vomiting, stomach pain, coughing, lip swelling, face swelling, rash, runny nose, or anything else)
and he isn't fussy so I don't know!
Thanks!
OH - and he just recently started teething (yay) but someone told me that can cause the runs too...
I don't know where it said he is 4 months old - he is 5 months old and it was because he was still hungry after feedings and she said he was ready.

Well madame. Ignore any rude comments people have to say because from my experience of a gillion kids the PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE, & DOCTOR said rice and oats are okay to start (in small portions) at 4 months. All my kids had rice that early and are fine, Matts mom did it for her kids and so did others. Its the same as walking talking, just because the experts say 12 months it can go early, or later. Im voting its from the teething, not an allergice reaction, and do everyone who is rude **** YOU!!!!
**Awww I got a thumbs down. LOL Isn't sad that people will thumbs down you on your parenting styles when I am 100% sure they are ******* up somewhere in there lives with their kids......oh wait...everyone on yahoo has perfect angels. Dumb asses!! If a pediatrician says its ok, then obviously it's fine. People are asking for advice and giving it...NOT to be critisised.

You should check out www.kellymom.com. My wife uses it for a lot of reference due to the good articles and that most Lactation consultants she talked to, pointed her to it.
They say that you SHOULD NOT feed your baby solides until at least 6 months, but its based on their developmental ability after that point, not just a magical time.
Supposedly babies intestines don't develop until 6 months (cells close together) which can allow larger particles (proteins, etc) into their system which can lead to early on allergies.
i would do an extensive search before proceeding. Doctors are not always right (esp ones that have been in the business for 20-30 years) as they dont always have the time to catch up on all the new studies.

right here i'm hoping i'm able to respond to your questions: a million) that's large to start point 2 now.... point 2 frequently would desire to be began at 6 months (it even says that on the jars!) yet in simple terms make effective once you introduce a clean food you wait approximately 4 days in the previous introducing yet another new food to learn for hypersensitive reaction's and because maximum point 2 toddler food jars are 2 ingredients blended do not introduce 2 new ingredients on the comparable time, because of the fact in case you do you will not be responsive to which food that's that he's allergic to 2) you're able to do the two. i might try sticking with some issues you be responsive to he's already not allergic to and then upload a million blended puree that day, then wait some days in the previous introducing yet another new diverse blended puree 3) Cereal two times an afternoon is large, sounds large! you may provide him as a lot cereal as you like in simple terms make effective he remains getting adequate formulation...you will desire to not be lowering the quantity of formulation he's getting given which you have began on solids. 4) you will desire to not rigidity him to consume something yet you will desire to shop offering to it. each now and then it takes somewhat one awhile in the previous they settle for a clean food. So whether you think of he would not like a clean food you may wait a pair days and attempting offering it returned, whether it relatively is in effortless terms a million spoonful. i don't see how he won't be able to like numerous fruit, there are lots of end result! 5) i might in simple terms try a various puree the next day and then the day after that possibly pass returned to offering the single you thought he did not like...you in no way be responsive to a minimum of sooner or later he will possibly not consume it and the subsequent he would!

It looks like he's 4 months old? That's still quite early for solids. Did your doctor give you a reason that he felt that YOUR son needed solids this early? (Current recommendations are to wait until 6 months to begin.)
The diarrhea probably just means that his digestion isn't yet ready to handle foods other than milk. So I'd stop the solids for a few weeks at least, and then try again. When you try again you could offer fruits or veggies and see if he does better with those.

Solids this early is something you do if you absolutely have to, not something you do because you fancy trying it and the doctor said you could. It's not a race.
Unless he was utterly miserable on just milk, I would stop the solids until he is six months old. There aren't any advantages to it, and there are an awful lot of risks which you simply don't need to take.

Meaghan i gave you a thumbs up. i started my little boy on solids at 4 months and he did just fine he is 5 months now and loves eating solids. i would chalk the runny diapers to teething.

More bad advice from a pediatrician.... Your doctor's advice is based off of one day in once class in med school that he took probably 20 years ago. It today's world, you have access to so much good information, better than what your doctor gave you.

Your baby is only 4 months old, continue with just formula bottles. There is _no_ benefit to baby cereal, he needs the high fat content of his formula much more than he needs empty calorie starches.
*ETA your last question that I posted a link to said he was 4 months 1 week ago. And according to your last question, he was eating 2 oz every couple of hours. Again- he needs the high fat nutrient dense calories from his formula to satisfy his hunger, the rice or oat cereal is just empty starches- no calorie dense nutrition there.
