If you eat meat raised in America you are eating diseased meat. That is why they have to pump them full of antibiotics so the animals don't die of their illnesses before they reach the slaughterhouse floor. I'm sure you saw the pictures of the "downer cows" being prodded with electric probes to get on their feet so the inspectors could say they must be safe, go ahead on and push them into the food chain and not lose any production?
Inspect the carcasses, you have to be kidding. The company picks out one in maybe two or three thousand carcasses and the inspector nods his head as he passes by to pick up his bribe and that's it.
Until the next inspection maybe months later everything gets a pass. None get a thorough inspection it takes to much time. That's not what the company is paying for. Time is money.
By the way , the "mad cow disease " prions can take temperatures exceeding 800F. Do you cook your beef hotter than that? Of course not. Like Aids "Mad cow" may take up to 15 years to express itself in a type of "Old timer's" style dementia. How could you prove it was their cow?

This question makes me want to become a vegetarian... and I love a good steak! lol! I would hope that any diseased animal is discarded completely, but somehow I doubt that's the case. I would also hope that they would inspect the entire "animal" before it becomes a "carcass", because that's the only way make sure it's not sick, and safe to eat.
But to be honest, I'll eat my cheeseburger and take my chances! :-D

1.) No...
2.) They should condemn the whole animal.
3.) 100% should be inspected.
In these times, the correct answers to these questions may never be known. If school teachers are being encouraged to resign or retire or they are being terminated from their jobs, I no longer expect 100% of the responsibilities taken by the US Government are being performed.

The FDA usually inspects and destroys the animal(s) found and any they may feel could be infected. I have see a heard of 30-40 Sheep or Cows killed because the FDA said to do it.
