How to make red butter cream frosting?

I am making cupcakes for my daughter's birthday party and plan to make the frosting red and add chocolate chips so they look like ladybugs. I know how to make butter cream frosting with or without chocolate, just wondering if there is some special way to make it with food coloring. Thanks!

Update:

I am also worried that adding too much food coloring will make it runny and not stiff- I assume add more powdered sugar?

Just make your regular buttercream recipe, and add a drop of red food colouring at a time until you get the colour you want. If it ends up being too thin, you can always add a bit more powdered sugar. =)

To make it ladybug red, you definitely need the No Taste red gel food coloring. Use a clean toothpick to scoop some of the food coloring out of the little container and into the frosting. If you need to add more of the food coloring, use a new, clean toothpick EACH TIME so that you don't contaminate your food coloring. Continue adding the food coloring, a bit at a time, until you have reached the desired color.

Gel food coloring does not make your frosting runny, like a lot of the liquid kind would.

If you use ordinary red gel food coloring or the liquid-type food coloring, your frosting will taste AWFUL!

    Good luck!

You must use a concentrated paste food color. Go to Walmart or a craft store and buy Wilton red-red or no taste red gel paste food color. It will be with the cake decorating stuff.

just put red food coloring in it and stir, it might take alot to get a deep red color.

i did the same with neon blue.
