can't set resolution of screen?

I need a screen resolution of 1024by 768- It is set for those value but the real resolution I get is

960by600 which is not enough for what I need to do, and that is the best resolution I can get. Don't know if the problem is the monitor or the computer- I'm kind of computer iliterate- apreciate any guidance

    If its set to 1024 x 768 but only giving 960 x 600 it could be that your screen or graphics card don't support anything more than that.

    Have you ever had 1024 x 768 resolution in the past. What operating system are you using

    Right click on the desktop and see if you can get into "graphics properties"
