I'm embarrassed of being black?

By the way I live in a predominately Hispanic city. Like when I'm out in public I feel like every one is going to look down at me or try to get away from me because my skin is a dead giveaway. I'm mixed (Puerto Rican, Cuban, Native American, and black...) but my skin is a little dark and my hair is dry looking like black people...

If I pass by a white person I feel like they're gonna hide their purses and look their car doors. It's just so embarrassing to be black. i know I should love who I am and i do for the most part just not the black part of me.

Today at school I got out of the car and this group of hispanic guys were all like "Hey negra!" repeatedly and I just ignored it but I know they were talking to me because I was like the only person outside (I think) and it's just like I can't live or go anywhere without someone reminding me of my "blackness"

"Having a chip on one's shoulder" (being defensive due to something that has happened in the past) has been empirically supported. Research on prejudice indicated that those who have been the subject of prejudice, or perceive so, were more aggressive, sadder, more anxious, and more egotistical than those not perceiving such prejudice (Dion & Earn, 1981). Once a person has been discriminated against, it is more likely that the person will be hypersensitive to perceived discrimination, possibly seeing it where it does not exist. And, their perceptions of prejudice interfere with their accepting the culture of the majority group.

It is conceivable that one could feel the way you do as an emotional reaction, not based on reality, but based on feelings. Live your life, and do not give unreasonable weight to what others may or may not be thinking.

It is the chiefest point of happiness that a man is willing to be what he is.

    Desiderius Erasmus (1466-1536)

I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it.

If you are embarassed of being black than you have to expect people to treat you like crap. If you don't love who you are as a person, how can you expect other people to love who you are as a person? Easy answer: you can't. There is nothing wrong with being black. It doesn't matter what color you are, EVERYONE experiences racism at some point in their lifetime. Some may not experience it in the same way that you do, but EVERYONE sooner or later will experience it.

So, the question is what can you do about this so called embarassment that you feel. The first thing that you can do is stop listening to ignorant people. Anyone who uses derogatory language like the "n" word, or any variation of it, is ignorant. Those people aren't worth the air that they breath on this planet, and you should not give what they say a second thought. As for the way that you think other people see you (like that whites will lock their car doors when they see you), the number of people who would actually do that is a very small percentage of the whole population of people and you can't live your life worrying about how a few people might react to you.

No matter who you are, what you look like, or what color your skin is, you will experience people who dislike you. The key in life is to find a group of people that you can relate to and a group of people that makes you happy. Those people are friends, and they will be with you until the end, if they are genuine, no matter what color your skin is.

HAY THERE. Before you jump to conclusions and believe the tabloid crap I think you should know your facts. Michael Jackson did not bleach his skin you idiot, he had Vitiligo, which is a skin disorder, read up on it if you like. Because of the patches on his skin that the Vitiligo caused, he had to cover up with lighter make-up which matched. Stop being so ignorant. Stop believing the hype and stop running your mouth before you know the facts. Also, Beyonce doesn't bleach her skin either so to answer you're question, Michael was always PROUD to be black, he was very upset at what his Vitiligo did but he couldn't do anything to stop it.

look here eye am... a black man... and eye live in a predominately white area. what eye have to say is that eye am the talk of the town. not in a negative way but in a positive way. no matter how many may hate me eye always remain positive and speak to many of people in a positive manner. when you remain positive and keep smiling no matter whats going on on the inside, you can change others perspective of you just by the way you act. if you have a negative attitude then the universe is going to provide you with situations that will confirm your thinking. Don't give the others a chance to say anything negative... you speak with a smile first and watch the responses you get. it doesn't matter who you are, no matter whats the race, someone is always going to hate. and eye leave the hate were it lies and not let it enter my heart. no one has the power to take away my joy and eye spread it everywhere eye go. it becomes contagious when you remain positive. become the change you wish to see in others. begin conversations and don't be afraid. someone will talk to you and if you be cool then you will begin to pick up friends. some people are negative and you can't change them but you can change your surroundings purely with positive thinking.

You should not ever feel embarrassed of who you are! you must embrace it! I used to be so insecure but one day I just realized, it hit me like a baseball bat, that I don't live for other people. I should not live for yesterday or tomorrow, but live for the moment. Everyday I used to pick out all the problems i had. But I didn't realize that all those little things are what made me, ME! You should be proud of who you are. Don't let others bring you down. That is what is tearing our world apart, the color of are skin. You are beautiful inside and out!

You should be ashamed of yourself for being ashamed of being black. There are haters everywhere and it doesnt matters if you were rican, there would always be something that somebodys going to hate off. You should be proud to be black. if Somebody say something pay it no mind because forreal, ricans are wayyyyy worse than black ppl. I know im half native american, got the hair eyes, everything but ive always told ppl that im completely black and ive been rockin micros forever. My point is that every race is racist againist each other and thats not going to change so just love yout race no matter what anybody says.

What makes you think there's anything wrong with being black? How do you think a white person feels living in China?

All skin tones are just adaptations to environment- none are any better or worse than others.

And? Come on hun. I wear the hijab. You know that headscarf we muslims wear?

I always get Americans starring at me and my scarf. But it doesnt bother me, I just look back at them and smile, and they end up smiling back.

You really can't be ashamed of anything. By being embarassed that you're black, you imply to others that you somehow feel "inferior" to them. Is this the message you want to give out to society? That it's embarassing to be black and that blacks are inferior?

Yes, you are black. And I'm a muslim with a rag on my head and the more conservative clothing. But America is diverse and thats what's beautiful of it. You've got to be proud of who you are. No one will accept you if you cant even accept yourself.

In my opinion the color of your skin is irrelevant now days, people read to much into it. You shouldn't be embarrassed of your ethnicity, you are who you are and can't help it. You have to respect yourself before you can expect others to respect you. Also don't make preconceived notions about people, you don't know what their thinking when you walk by, its not fair to them if you judge them by their personal appearance, just like it wouldn't be right if they judged you. Don't ever be embarrassed of who you are, be proud of yourself for what you can do and what you accomplish and by doing kind things for other people because that is what really matters.

You can think of it like this: Hey, I may be black, but at least I'm not like those Hispanic people who act all gangster and think they're tough and whose women are just a bunch of sluts with no morals.
