To those who don't support unions...?

If you don't think workers should form unions to support one another, then who do you think should support workers?

If you think governmental safety regulations, and the like, solve the problems, the government will hardly ever stick up for workers. It mainly serves those who already have power and wealth.

If you think the market solves the problems, I think in the long run the incentives might work that way, but the market isn't an independent entity. If the market solves problems, it's because people in it work to solve problems, and create ways to solve problems - for example workers organizing for more bargaining power, sharing info on working conditions at different places, and so on, or workers organizing together to help build cooperatives.

Update:

Do you think these issues have just gone away? I think the more they crack down on unions, the more these issues are coming back. Wages have been stagnant since the '70s, while profits have skyrocketed, and costs of living have climbed. I think it takes strong, worker-controlled organizations to solve these problems.

its republican class hate, they say the democrats and liberals do that with the rich, its the republicans way of doing the same. They don't understand that the unions keep the workers jobs, they don't see that you take away regulations, more jobs will leave america because in capitalism, profit is king, and taking jobs over seas, instead of paying 10 bucks an hour, you only need to pay a quarter, so its just republican class hate.

I support unions for private companies, although I don't support things like elections where a 300 pound man that is 7'4" hands you a ballot and says "you want to vote to be in the union, don't you." And then you get to get to vote publicly. This is what unions are trying to get passed calling it "employee free choice" or something. But I support unions for private companies because Ford can't pass a law that makes everybody give them part of their income. But a state govt can pass a law. So a public employee union could say, "we want to make 5 million dollars an hour or we will go on strike until we get paid that much." So then the state could give them that salary and then raise taxes to 200 percent (where you have to pay twice as much as what you make in taxes). Then when people say, um we're not going to pay those taxes the state will say "well we are going to put you in jail" and the people will say, "no when you come to put me in jail I will shoot bullets at you to stop you" and the state govt will shoot bullets back and eventually kill them because they police have more bullets and stuff. So public unions are able to bring about the death of taxpayers. So we don't need public unions. That is unless you think its more important for public workers to get paid 5 million dollars an hour than it is for a regular taxpayer to not be killed by the police. You do think that don't you? Don't you? So you agree that public unions are not needed. That's good for a minute there I thought you supported cops killing people.

Republicans have been trying since Reagan to break the unions. We used to have union mines all over Illinois, but the government said coal was to high in sulfur in Illinois. Now that they have got them all except a few in Illinois shutdown ,now sulfur is no problem and we have non unions mines all over Illinois. This is the way Washington takes care of it's people.

Source(s): 30 year retired union coal miner.

Unions have done their selves in by being bullies, power hungry and greedy. Now they are just seen as more fat cats.No better then the old mob members.Get rid of the old dinosaur union and bring in a new watered down version.I really don't want to go to work everyday and work as hard as i do to pay a teachers health care and pension. While i struggle to pay my basic bills each month.Sorry.

Unions 100 years ago were needed to help workers with these issues. Today, they are the greedy fatcats who cry about Gov Walker giving more freedom to public workers not to join a union.

Republicans don't support unions but they also don't support; a clean environment, education, the poor, or peace.
