My new Harley makes an odd clank when I go over road bumps. Mechanic says no worries. Should I?
It's a 2010 with only 565 miles on it. I hit a devastating bump and since then it makes a horrible clanking noise as if something is loose when I go over any significant bumps. The H-D mechanic said not to worry. He feels it may be the steering head bearings. He said he would check those at the 1000 mile check up. This has me worried. Under warranty, so no problems there. Just concerned.

Take it back to the shop and demand it be fixed immediately. The mechanic sounds like an idiot.

If you had loose head bearings, you would be able to feel it in the bars themselves when you hit the bump.If this bike is under warranty take it back and ask the sevice manager to take it for a spin.If he fails to act call Harley Davidson directly and I would bet they make 1 call and get things rolling for you.

Take it back and demand a repair! Loose head bearings are most certainly a safety issue and shouldn't be dismissed as "eh, we'll check em later."

bike is making the noise now.... so under warranty the bike should be fixed now..
if you riding down the road with faulty head bearings & the bike decides to tank slap & throw itself down the road.... the repairs are not covered under warranty...
so take the bike in & get it fixed...

Check the fuel tank mounting bolts.
Had the same noise appear after hittting a big frost heave ...heard the same thing from a mechanic.
Found it myself.

Sometimes mine does that if I hit a driveway slope too fast, as if the front end is bottoming out.

It is normal for Harleys to clunk and leak oil. Just part of ownership. Or, you could pay less for larger better running japanees bike. But, hey, then you wouldn't own a harley.
