What can we do with a dog that hates riding in a car?

We recently rescued a doberman from a local shelter. Of course we didn't know that riding in a car would be so stressful on him. He goes completely out of his mind crying and barking. Kind of hard because we travel a lot. Any suggestions would help. He is perfect in the house and the yard and is completely command trained. Why would he be so stressed?

Try taking this dog to an ice cream stand a short distance from your home. Buy him a cup of ice cream and let him eat it there, You get yourself some ice cream too and eat it while he is eating his in the car (Beware, it could be a little messy.).Then you tell him he is going home. He will learn to love these short trips, and it is a good bribe that dogs love. This is how I started out with my pup. He was scared too. The trip, with a treat waiting-- was a big deal to him. He learned to look forward to going to the ice cream stand and to MC Donald's for a plain burger Happy Meal. He only got part of his burger...the rest was saved for later(I 've got a small dog now) My last trip with him was to travel where I now live.. driving a 24" UHaul, towing my car on a trailer for 200+ miles. He was great on the trip and learned to sleep pretty much of the traveling time. Once your new dog associates a treat, and that he is coming home with you he will settle down. It is fear of the car, and not going home with his family...dogs DO remember. At first it might be a little uncomfortable...but he will settle down around the third trip!

Start by taking him on short car rides around the block, give him a cookie when he's done then, put him back in his yard. Take him on short little pleasure trips, someplace fun, like a park or place he likes to play, this way he starts associating car rides with, fun instead of stress. A lot of times they're just stressed out by being in the car for extended periods of time, and honestly most dogs dont even get to go in cars unless they're going to a vet for treatment. If that doesn't work after a few weeks, put him in a crate, to help keep him calm when traveling, and again, start with a few short trips a week.

you may need to re introduce him slowly to the car..give him a treat .. let him get in the car, then let him back out do that a few times..tho the first few may be hard to get him to get in..but once he's in, let him come back out. have all the doors open so he doesn't feel trapped? then after a few days, maybe let him stay in the car for a few minutes.. don't praise him if he seems anxious. just be quiet, when he settles down, let him come out. you always want to praise the behavior you want.. if he is nervous, don't touch him or talk to him.. to him, he's getting a reaction and will now think that's what he needs to do to get attention.. so once he is calm, give him a treat. this may take a while.. you will need to be patient and consistant. good luck

He may have had a bad experience with a car before you rescued him, maybe he was in a car crash. Take him out for daily short car drives where somebody is in the back with him stroking and comforting him, hopefully he'll get over it soon.

My dog hates cars and the train. She pants and shakes. This all started when we got in a car accident. It helps if I cover her head and pet her. Being in a doggy travel bag with a blanket over it helps, too.

Could be his last owner took him on a car ride and dumped him off. That's what happened with my aunt's dog. So they only take him on car rides when they absolutely have to. My advice is to have someone come dog sit when you all are gone.

We have to big dogs who completely freeze up in a car and refuse to get in we eventually figured out if you put their heads on your lap and rub their ears they calm down allot.
