why do pet firms and others sell illegal pet products openly in the USA?

There are a number of tylosin tartrate (antibiotic) dog and cat tears stain based products that are sold openly in the USA. ALL of them are illegal but large retail outlets sell them, as well as very large auction sites.

Do they really not care about anything other than the bottom line?!?!?!?!

Update:

sid- sadly i think you are right

Update 2:

ragapple- you may well be correct regarding the making of these products. Never-the-less they know that it is illegal to give tylosin tartrate to a dog without a prescription. Even vets have to prescribe it "off label"

Update 3:

Leigh- sorry but you are wrong!!! The only form of tylosin that is approved for dog use is the injection version, all others must be used off label. Tylosin tartrate may onlt be purchased OTC for use as a growth promoter in food live stock- ie poultry, cattle and swine. If you don't believe me ask the FDA. I already have...

Update 4:

thanks for anwering- I will give the points to ragapple- having looked into things more I have discovered that the likes of Angels eyes and pets sparks are 100% illegal to give to your dog or cat to help with tear staining unless you have a vet prescription.

IMO such products can lead to a rise in MRSA type bugs- the makers should bow their heads in shame. By the same token the authorities should be protecting the public from them...

Update 5:

BTW sid hould have had the points but i dont know how to split them.

err actually I will give them to sid because I agree with his sentiment- sorry ragapple

It is NOT illegal to dispense this drug OTC in the dosages used in products like Angels' Eyes. There are MANY drug products available over-the-counter, things you may use on a regular basis, not even realizing they are drug products. For example, acne face washes often contain salicylic acid or benzoil peroxide-both are drug products. Neosporin contains antibiotics. Etc., etc., etc.

Actually from what I have read they have found a nick - while not exactly LEAGAL they are not exactly ILLEGAL either! the loophole is its not a food animal and the product is not treating a DISEASE! Similar loophole is enjoyed my many herbal supplements human and animal.

  • I have no idea what you are talking about.

If they are illegal, then how are they being sold? Maybe your knowledge of what is legal and illegal isn't correct.
