Mormons, what's with the underwear?

It's not magic underwear, and the best explanation I can give you comes from a leader of the church...

“The garment represents sacred covenants. It fosters modesty and becomes a shield and protection to the wearer. … The garment, covering the body, is a visual and tactile reminder of [covenants made in the temple]. For many Church members the garment has formed a barrier of protection when the wearer has been faced with temptation. Among other things it symbolizes our deep respect for the laws of God—among them the moral standard” (Boyd K. Packer, Preparing to Enter the Holy Temple, 20, 23).

So... in temples of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints we make covenants, or promises with God. Garments are a constants reminder of those covenants. Also, you could compare them to "uniforms" worn by professional clergy in other churches. In the LDS church, we don't have a paid clergy, my local leaders could be mechanics, doctors, lawyers, etc. But these men (and most of the men in the church) have the priesthood. So in a way, it's like wearing the uniform of the priesthood under your clothing, rather than wearing another type of clerical uniform because you're going to work at a hospital or something.

Mormons wear normal clothes, do normal things, and live normal lives. Garments are meant to remind us of our covenants with God.
