Finding a property owner?

I found a house for sale I am very interested in but I don't know how to contact the owner. It is out in the country and it's an old house, I know the previous occupants were an old couple because I grew up around there and used to ride my quad by the house a lot in the summer, I know the name on the for sale sign but the number has been faded off as it's been on the house for a few years but I just noticed it was for sale but there are no longer any occupants and very few neighbors who are more then a mile away. Is there some way to find the seller?

in most advanced countries, the property recorder's office can help you.

it frequently helps to begin at the tax assessor's office. the tax assessor's data may be months old, but it'll give you a name and parcel number to take to the property recorder to look for recent transfers.
