How many spark plugs would a 12.5 hp Kawasaki lawn mower engine probably have?

have a lawn mower engine that is a 12.5 hp kawasaki...and is also a "4 stroke air cooled V-twin " gasoline engine.

how many spark plugs it probably has...and IF NEEDING TO POUR A BIT OF OIL INSIDE THE SPARK PLUG HOLES...HOW MUCH ? AND HOW WILL I KNOW IT IS ENOUGH?

ALSO, ANY TIPS ON HOW TO REMOVE THE SPARK PLUGS? AND ALSO POUR A BIT ON THE END OF THE SPARK PLUG? WHY SO?

Why are you doing this now? You will be mowing grass in another month.

If you type in 12.5 Kawasaki engine you will see Stens has a tune-up kit which has an air cleaner and *one spark plug. The V-twin motor will have one plug per cylinder. Use a 5/8 deep well 3/8 socket, short extension and a ratchet, turn counter-clockwise to get them out. *Before screwing the plugs back in an aluminum cylinder head, wipe a small amount of Never Seize on the threads of the plugs. This step perserves the spark plug threads inside the head.

One squirt of automatic transmission fluid is all that's needed in each cylinder after removing the spark plugs. *Do not put oil on the spark plug itself! Spin the engines over a half dozen times before putting the plugs back in the engines.

1 plug per cylinder so 2 plugs for a v-twin. Why oil in the spark plug holes? Oil normally goes into the oil refill hole. Pouring oil into the spark plug holes will cause a lot of smoke when the machine is started and the oil can foul the spark plugs (covers them in black sticky soot). There should be a dip stick on the oil filler hole so you can see the oil level (may have a separate dip stick depends on engine design). Oil never goes into the spark plug holes.

Removal of plugs usually done with a ratchet and a spark plug socket (right size). New plugs should be properly gaped so that there is proper spark. You can clean the plugs and re-gap them using a small flat file to clean the surface and between the points of the plug and then use a gap tool to measure and bend the lower contact to proper gap.

A v-twin has two cylinders, so it will have two spark plugs. Also, you should not put oil in the spark plug holes. There will be a special place to add oil to. You will want to put some anti-sieze in the spark plug threads though. You can pick up a small amount of anti-sieze at the auto parts store. As far as removing the spark plugs, you will want to use a spark plug socket that matches the size of your spark plugs, also found at the auto parts store Do not put anything on the end (electrode) of your spark plug. You will want to put some dielectric grease on the end of your spark plug where the wire connects to. You can also get this at the auto parts store.

    1. There is at least 1, but there could be up to 3 (my theory).

    2. And don't pour oil in the spark plug holes, pour gas, and just a little splash in each.

    3. Use a socket wrench w/ an extension to get the spark plug off, and get a towel or cloth w/ gas on it to put on the ends of the spark plug(s). This helps create the spark, so the mower can start. I would recommend keeping the mower running for a couple minutes so it can warm up. This will work. Good luck.

If it's a V twin it has 2 Don't pour oil on the plug or in the cylinder, it will fowl the plugs when you start it. You just need a socket or any type of wrench that fits tight on the plug to remove it. The plugs will need to be gaped before installing them.

UH, wild guess, V-twin, uh TWO plugs...LOL

why would you pour oil on the plugs, you will foul it out. just change the plugs out and start the mower.

The only reason, you should have to put a very small amount of oil in the cylinder is if the mower has been sitting for longer than a year outside.

EDIT: recovering republican: how can a V-(TWIN) be a one cylinder engine? can you explain that to me, because I must of missed something, specially with your 40+ years of experience with one cylinder V-TWINS

I would love to find a V-Twin lawn mower, I could mow the hell outa some grass.

If it's a V-twin, it will have 2 spark plugs - one for each cylinder.

To remove the plugs, you use the appropriate sized spark plug spanner.

You only need to pour a few cc's of oil into the barrels.

Do not pour oil onto the plug electrodes. It will make the engine harder to start.

    2 plugs

About a thimble full per cylinder.

Do not pour a bit on the spark plug - you do this prior to storage not when waking it up again.

The spark plugs need a long reach sprocket of the correct size to fit the plugs, I do not know the size - these have a foam insert to grip the plug once it is off the threads so that you can easily remove and insert them, they sometimes come as part of a socket set.

(switch cap locks off when asking questions - it is considered rude and shouting)

  • This is a one cylinder engine. If starting for the first time this spring, smell the gasoline. If it smells like lacquer, dump it and add fresh gasoline. Gasoline does spoil. Stale gasoline is a major issue, so do not ignore the condition of the gasoline.

The idea of placing oil into the top of the cylinder is to lubricate the cylinder wall. If you do this, put a few drops (5CC) in then turn the engine over with the plug still out.

Then put a few drops of fresh gasoline in the cylinder, replace the plug and start the engine. It should fire up right away. If not, check the plug to make sure it has spark.

1 LOL if it has more then its one powerful lawn eater.

But if you say its a V twin then it should be 2.

And no dont put poil on the sparkplugs ? who told you to do that ?

oil will affect it ignition of gas
