How to play an old PC game on Vista?

I finally re-found one of my favorite games ever: Dark Earth by Kalisto/Microprose. I'm so excited!!

The only thing is I have Windows Vista and only a few minutes into the game it crashes and sends me right back to the desktop. It downloaded fine, and it seems I can only play it in the 32K color mode (I think thats right) which doesn't really matter to me, I just want to play it! Is there a way (without going back to 95/98/XP/etc) to play this still?

Please be very simple - I am no computer genius, thank you!

Playing old games is pretty tricky because a lot of games made assumptions about the computers that they're running on that aren't true any more. Your best option is to try running it in compatibility mode. Right click on the game and choose Properties. Click on the Compatibility tab on top. Click to run this program in Compatibility Mode and choose Windows 98. Hopefully that will work. If it doesn't, you can try playing with the other settings in the compatibility properties.

countless previous computing gadget video games artwork with Vista. i latterly performed some video games from the previous due Eighteen Eighties and early 1890s on the two Vista and 7. As previous posters have suggested, if installation and working does not artwork, you may attempt working by way of compatibility mode by potential of top clicking the the pastime, choosing homes, and then going to the compatibility tab. If this does not artwork and DOSBox does not artwork, you additionally can receive a digital device from the Microsoft website and deploy a prior version of homestead windows in case you have one and run it by way of that, which will virtually actually artwork. in case your processor does not help Microsoft's digital computing gadget, you additionally can partition your drives and deploy an in the previous version of homestead windows on certainly one of those drives and run the two that besides as Vista on your computing gadget. even with the undeniable fact that, those suggestions will possibly no longer artwork in case your computing gadget is working quad cores.

Find the .exe file in your Program Files folder. Right click it, then Properties. There should be a tab that says "Compatibility" or something (I'm trying to remember this off the top of my head, so please bear with me). Try running it in XP mode or similar, that may work better for you.
