Why do some consider themselves progressives,?

Yet bolster most arguments with a reference to the past? I know history is a good teacher, but using the 20-20 of hindsight concurrently gives a false truth to the present equation. Using past truths to bolster present unknowns does not make the unknowns any more known.

Oddly enough, I agree with you - though I don't think it is solely "progressives" who are guilty of this, by any means. Analogies from history are always inexact, and I don't really believe it is possible to make confident predictions about the future purely on the basis of uncontested facts about the past.

I see what you're saying... but overall, people don't want all totally new and untested ideas...

you could start that party, but it would fail quickly...

overall, "progressives" are merely "progressive" relative to the other side... we're all working from an older template for the most part... the conservative template is at least 200 years old, and the liberal one is well over 100 years old...

Progressives are inherently conservative (not classical liberals; more like 'scared of change') and thus rely on history to provide examples and guidance because they believe that society and the economy should return to some point before runaway technology and capitalism and thereafter stagnate.

They came full circle. Back when it was cool to adore Hitler in public and pledge oneself to making a fascist America the "American flavor" of the fascist/Nazi movement called themselves "Progressives."

Once "Hitler" and therefore also "Progressive" became dirty words here they began to call themselves "liberals" while pushing the EXACT SAME agenda.

Now that "liberal" has finally gained the SAME well-earned reputation they need to "re-brand" again and are going back to their original name ALL while still pushing the EXACT SAME policy set they wrote back when they PROUDLY ADMITTED they were enemies of our Constitutional Republic.

They want to be "Progressive" without knowing what occurred before they were born.

In order to be progressive we must REPEAT past mistakes. Crazy/

Progressive means moving forward not backwards.

    How is this "Progressive"?

This is the opposite of "Progressive".
