return of the jedi question?

with all the evil Vader has done why does saving Luke make him a good guy. Saving your own child could also be considered selfish. He would only be a good guy if he had turned from the dark side for a non selfish reason. what do you think

    It wasn't so simple as just the act of saving Luke. In turning on the Emperor, he defeated the most powerful Sith in the galaxy. And by turning good, he eliminated the last of the Sith presence in the Empire, meaning it could be returned to a Republic.

    Honestly, there is a prominent philosophical argument that people who do good deeds are selfish because you feel good about doing it. Therefore, since you are getting something out of it, there are no selflessly good people.

    Also, remember that circumstances with Vader's family are what brought him to the dark side, so it's nice that family is what brought him back to the light side of the force.

    I think he repented and is a good guy. Go Anakin!

    Anakin/Vader is a "good" person the whole time, Luke even says it multiple times he can "feel the good" inside him and he talks about "the conflict" within Vader. The real root cause of his evil actions stem from the emperor's deception and corruption. Yes Anakin did "choose" the path of the dark side, but only because he was lied to about the thing he cared for most in the world. After years of having his humanity eaten away he was face to face with the same choice when he's watching the emperor slowly kill Luke (the product of his love) and this time he is able to overcome his fear and see through the emperor thus redeeming himself and fulfilling the prophecy we learn about in The Phantom Menace (ugh) about a jedi that will bring balance to the force.

    The fact that he thought his children were dead and come to realize it would either be the empire or his son Luke, He chose his son. Even though they didn't get to know each other the bond never changed. Imagine having a son or daughter and thinking they were dead the whole time while they were growing up right under your nose. Then to make a choice to kill your own son or to destroy everything you've worked for. He placed his family first and this shows the humanity that was left in Darth Vader before he dies.

    But didn't he die saving Luke. So he gave his own life to save his son. The lightning the Emperor show from his hands also electrocuted Vader.

    I agree with Solid Snake, in the end, he shows his humanity. But in my opinion, just because he shows his humanity doesn't necessarily make him a good guy, though

    selfish?

    He sacrifices himself to save not just one lfe, but the entire galaxy from Sith rule!
