Is diphenhydramine natural?
I have trouble sleeping and recently started taking Melatonin. It is the first sleep aid I have ever taken. but, I have forgotten my Melatonin at home tonight and unable to get it. A friend just offered my a diphenhydramine capsule. I know it's in Benadryl and all. But, I basically refuse to take anything that's not natural. I have some "Sleepy time" tea. I was wondering if diphenhydramine is natural. If it's not I'm just taking some tea and going to bed. Thanks for any and all help.

Diphenhydramine is a synthetic chemical. Enjoy your tea and hope you get a good night's sleep. :)

one or two, but it will make you drowsy quickly and generally lasts for about 12 hours. It is a very safe sleep aid and is also used for allergic reactions. Try one and if one works, you won't need two the next night. It should kick in within 30 minutes. When I worked on a cardiac floor this was the med we gave patients. Also, after 3-4 nights of use, you may find your body has adjusted. A few days off will most likely reset your tolerance. It's not addicting, however, but the body gets used to it. You won't ever crave it like a benzodiazipene (xanax, ambien). A very very small minority of people find the drug makes them wired.
