Creationists, how do you exlpain this?
If the Genesis account of creation is true and God created all life at or near the same time, you'd expect the geologic column to show the beginning of all life forms in the same layer. In other words, animal fossils would all start in one layer of the column, and there would be no animal fossils whatsoever underneath that layer.
But the actual findings in the geologic column demonstrate otherwise...at the bottom there are only single-cell creatures, and as you go up the column organisms get more complex over (long periods of) time.
How is this possible?
@Elyon-
And how did the flood arrange all life on Earth neatly into the geologic column, so that it just so happens to look EXACTLY like you'd expect if life evoled on this planet in the order that it appears in the column? Floods cause DISORDER, they don't arrange things neatly in order.
@4HIM: "The geologic column is man made and not true. God's creation is recorded in Genesis in the Bible."
What is your evidence of this? For this to be true, tens of thousands of scientists and archaelogists have to be lying. No conspiracy has ever existed that involved that many people.
@ebby08: "How did the single-cells get there? How did the organisms get there? It just came out of no where huh? How amazing....something can be made from nothing now.
And this is supposed to be advanced knowledge?"
Actually, no...it's very BASIC science. Read a good biology book or two and you'll see exactly how the organisms "got there". Nobody is saying that each layer's fossils came from "nothing".
@Israel: "the layers were laid down during the flood, not over millions of years"
No legitimate scientist, biologist or archaelogist would agree with that. Plus, floods don't distribute things is such a precise, pristine manner. How did the fish get fossilied UNDERNEATH the reptiles then?
Again, if the geologic column is a lie, it's the biggest conspiracy in the history of this planet...tens of thousands, if not more, scientists would all have to be agreeing to lie about this. Yeah, that's likely.
@Atarah-
If that's true, why don't we see ANY human fossils buried below other layers? Even if most of them were intelligent enough to escape to higher ground, not ONE human on the ENTIRE Earth was washed out to sea and buried in the fish layer? Not ONE human was caught in a low valley or gorge and was buried in a lower layer? There has not been even a SINGLE human fossil buried lower than the upper layers where all human fossils have been found.
Also, what about the fact that the flood would also have destroyed all plant life? How did the Ark animals survive after the flood?

Channeling a creationist :
"Well, all fossils were laid down in the Flood. The reason we don't see a single jumbled layer of fossils (as would be expected) is because of some sort of physical process that sounded valid to me when I read it on a creationist website because I don't really understand science well enough to recognize when someone is lying to me."

First of all, there is only one place that the geological column you describe exists, and that's in your government-funded high school biology textbook.
Second, we find plenty of fossils that are supposedly out of order, and we find plenty of fossils that penetrate several layers of strata.
Third, think about where most "simple" life forms were when they were buried in the flood. They were on the ocean bed or in the dirt. They were already on the bottom, so naturally they were buried first, and other animals were deposited on top of them. Besides, a clam has a much harder time getting away from a wall of muddy water than a horse or a bird. Humans were usually deposited last because of their intelligence and ability to evade death and burial for a while. That's why we find so few human fossils compared to other animals. It's also why we find fewer bird fossils. Flight is a wonderful tool when you're trying to prolong your life. When the survivors of the initial eruptions and tsunamis finally died, they remained unburied and were subject to decay and scavenging.
Edit: I'd like to meet these tens of thousands of scientists. I was under the impression that there were only a few hundred particularly vocal ones.
I'd also like to know, if the geological column exists, where is it? How come we only see illustrations and not photographs?
And if you saw a wall of water coming, where would you run first? Up, right? Humans back then were extremely intelligent, possessing lifespans and equivalent experience of 912 years on average. I'm sure they had ways of getting away from the water. Besides, as you should well know, not every animal, plant or person to be buried is necessarily petrified. Some become oil, coal or chalk. Some simply waste away to nothing.
And the flood did not destroy all plant life. Some survived, like olives. Plus, Noah replanted seeds from the food stores he had on the ark. One of the first crops grown after the flood was grapes.

the world wide flood drowned all the animals and deposited them in different layers as they were laid down
no it does not demonstrate that
researchers even state it does not
The history of most fossil species include two features particularly
inconsistent with gradualism:
1) Stasis - most species exhibit no directional change during their tenure on earth. They appear in the fossil record looking much the same as when they disappear; morphological change is usually
limited and directionless;
2) Sudden appearance - in any local area, a species
does not arise gradually by the steady transformation of its ancestors; it
appears all at once and 'fully formed'. 44
44 S.J. Gould, "Evolution's Erratic Pace", Natural History, vol. 86, May 1977.
the fossil record does not support a gradual increase in more better animals
ancestor animals are constantly found above the animals they were said to have evolved to.
ever hear of the cambrian explosion
STEPHEN J. GOULD, HARVARD, "The Cambrian Explosion occurred in a geological moment, and we have reason to think that all major anatomical designs may have made their evolutionary appearance at that time. ...not only the phylum Chordata itself, but also all its major divisions, arose within the Cambrian Explosion. So much for chordate uniqueness... Contrary to Darwin's expectation that new data would reveal gradualistic continuity with slow and steady expansion, all major discoveries of the past century have only heightened the massiveness and geological abruptness of this formative event..." Nature, Vol.377, 26 10/95, p.682
it happens with suddenness not gradual with any preancestors present

I do not lean on traditional ideologies concerning Genesis. The Hebrew word for "Day" is not selective towards a 12 or 24 hour period of time. It can mean any era of time (the word is transliterated "TOWM"). So the Genesis story isn't about a literal seven day period, but about an expanse of time much broader than that.
I believe in the "Gap Theory of Genesis 1:1- 1:2". Anyone could google that theory, and it's opposing views on that kind of search.

No. No. No. Do not mention the geologic column - it confuses them because they say it can never be found in tact anywhere in the world!!! lol. Seriously - they do.

Facts are completely incompatible with Genesis.

Did you take the flood into account?
Gen 7:23 And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained [alive], and they that [were] with him in the ark.
