I'm not a huge fan of war movies... but The Hurt Locker was pretty amazing. Very realistic.
Some I do like are:
Bridge on the River Kwai
The Dirty Dozen
Stalag 17
Apocalypse Now
The English Patient
Schindler's List
**edit**
Just remembered another one: Father Goose. Operation Petticoat, too. Good to see someone name Kelly's Heroes.

Oh it's a good movie, not my favorite war movies but it's good
My favorite war movies are "Gone With the Wind", "Grave of The Fireflies" and "Rail to The Star"
The first one is epic and the book is much MUCH better since it has more details about the civil war, the second one is an anime tragical movie about 2 siblings and how they suffer in World War II
the third one is about a young girl in Korea war, also a nice sad anime

The Hurt Locker-0/10
its horrible. the acting is nothing special, there is NO plot at all, and its unrealistic.
if u wanna see a REALISTIC war movie. watch these
Generation Kill-its a HBO 7 part mini series about Recon Marines during the invasion of Iraq. its a true story. and by far the best and most realistic military movie i have ever seen. the Marines that its about say its the closest u can possibly get to the real thing without actually being there.
Band of Brothers- 10 part HBO mini series. its a true story about a company of Paratroopers who fought during World War 2 in Normandy, Holland, and Belgium.
The Pacific- 10 part HBO mini series. its a true story about 3 different Marines who fought during World War 2. shows the battles of Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa
Black Hawk Down-true story about Operation Gothic Serpent in Mogadishu Somalia.during a mission to capture a warlords top allies, 2 Black Hawk helicopters are shot down. Rangers and Deltas have to fight through the night while waiting for humvees to come get them
71 into the Fire- true story. made in South Korea. its about 71 student soldier trainees who fought the North Koreans during the Korean war
Letters from Iwo Jima- the battle of Iwo Jima shown from the Japanese side

Well, the hurt locker did jumped over avatar, so it's a high profile movie. If you can get past iraq sentimentalism, them you'll enjoy the movie.
My favorite war movies are : saving private ryan, pearl harbour, top gun (it got fighter planes so i'll take it as a war movie) and my favorite, good morning vietnam.
