Do I need a passport to get into Canada?

I'm going to Canada through New York. I heard that you don't need a passport to get into Canada but you need on to enter the US. If I show my birth certificate and proof of residency they have to let me back in right? So do I have to get a passport or not?

If you are flying into Canada you will need a passport book. If you are driving, you can use a passport card. The days of not needing one or the other and using a birth certificate are long gone

You do not need a passport to enter Canada at a land crossing. You do however need a passport to re-enter the US, citizen or not.
