What was the theological basis for church division over the issue of slavery in 19th century America?

Many US Protestant churches schismed over the slavery issue. Some still haven't reunited.

What were the theological arguments that divided these denominations (and often individual congregations)?

Pro slavery- scriptures all over the bible not only condoning slavery but giving "guidelines" for ownership as well.

    Abolitionists- morality

I see this split on issues today. Baptist churches taking on the homosexuality "problem" with their youth while Lutheran churches gear more towards fudging over the text and "loving thy neighbor".

The funny thing is, religiously the abolitionists were in the wrong scripturally, but at least half a**ed some sort of support of abolition.

The Lutherans have taken an indifferent stance on gay marriage as to not lose members, that's about what the anti-slavery churches did. They didn't want to be "black people" lovers (haha I'm so pc).

The whole point of Christianity is to become humble and selfless under God.

The whole point of slavery is to be PRIDEFUL, arrogant, manipulative and controlling. This behavior is NOT Christian in the least bit!

The Christian Church split about the nature of PRIDE.

Does one do things for other people OR try to get people to do things for yourself?
