If a team is down by a goal or two, the coach will try to pull the goalie for an extra skater to try to tie it up and force overtime. Sometimes it works, and sometimes, the other team gets an empty net goal.

If you pull your goalie you can have one extra player on the ice. Teams usually do this when they're down so they have a better chance of scoring and tying the game up. They usually don't do it until the end because it is a desperate move considering how easy it is for the other team to score into your empty net :)

a team is allowed only 6 players on the ice at a time, one of which is the goalie.... when a team is behind and they need a quick goal, and have nothing to lose, they will pull their goalie and put an extra defensive or offensive player out on the ice instead of the goalie Creating the miss match on the ice can help score a quick goal, but it can also work against you.

The idea of each sport is winning and losing by a goal or more is still losing. By adding another skater, you increase your chances of tying the game and going in overtime to win. Once the Ducks were losing by two goals and took of their goalie and scored two goals to tye the game. It doesn't happen all the time but it's far better than settling for a narrow loss.

You can sub the goalie off for an extra player if you want. Teams usually do this near the end of games when they are down by a goal or two and are desperate to score. It's a gamble since it's a lot easier for them to score, but having 6 skaters also makes it a lot easier for you to score.

It's to put an extra skater on the ice to increase the chances of scoring a goal to tie up the game.

It's basically a last resort. You are taking the risk of adding another player to hope you can get a goal. It's like power play that can backfire easily. If they get the ball anywhere beyond the half they'll shoot. It a dangerous once shot play for the win.
