Is it safe to handle a red eyed tree frog while pregnant?

My son just got a red eyed tree frog for a pet. The guy at the pet store said that it wasn't poisonous and as long as my son washed his hands immediately after handling it that there shouldn't be any problems. But when I read the care instruction sheet after getting home there is a warning that the chemical secreted by the frog can cause an allergic reaction in some people. The pet store guy didn't say anything about it.

My son is only 6 and he does well holding the frog but he can't get it out of its tank. I discovered last night that the frog will climb willing onto a bare hand but is terrified if you wear a rubber glove. I can't find anything about this "chemical' online and I'm concerned about it because I am pregnant. Is it safe for me to handle this frog or not? Any info would be appreciated.

you shouldn't handle amphibians regularly anyway.

    1. amphibians have delicate skin that can easily be injured

    2. amphibians absorb everything, if your son has any kind of harmful chemicals/salts/oils etc on his had then this will be absorbed by the frog, this can lead to skin infections or (depending on what it absorbed) poisoning regular handling makes this much more likely

    3. red eyed treefrogs are quite easily stressed, regular handling could cause further stress.

as for are you safe while pregnant its possible for amphibians to carry certain diseases (e.g. salmonella but there no more risk than with other pets) which is why you need to wash your hands as for the chemical its not really harmful (it apparently tastes quite bad tho) but as said in rare cases it can cause an allergic reaction but its unlikely.

it seems you already know about using powder free latex gloves to move them on the occasions you need to (e.g. cleaning) but due to there delicate nature I wouldn't ever really say red eyes were a good pet for a 6 year old

Wash your hands and do not get any of the mucous secretion in any cuts. I only say this b/c of pregnancy. The reality is the chance is VERY VERY LOW that even eating the frog raw would cause any problems. Their skins secretions are a MILD irritant at best.

Additional information if desired can be search out of toxinology.com using the scientific name.

I say no. Just because you don't want to risk it. I know, I'm not much of a help, but you don't want to risk losing the baby. If an adult needs to handle the frog, then ask your husband. Good luck, with the baby and the frog!!

i think of purple eyed tree frogs are the main pleasing of all. i like their little orange palms and yellow and blue markings alongside the climate. I even have raised them earlier... needed they have been extra hardy, yet they are my maximum popular amphibian interior the international.
