BEST air purifier for child with severe allergy disease!!!?

I need info. (good and bad) on air purifiers. I'm not worried about the price as much as I'm worried about the effectiveness! My son is REALLY sick and we just moved into a filthy (dusty, moldy?, etc...) without knowing. I will appreciate any advice! Thank you SO much!!!

The air purifier you use depends on what you want to get out of the air. If your son has health problems, stay away from ionizers and any machine that produces ozone. Your best bet is to stick with a HEPA filter. You want a machine that is properly sized for his bedroom. Calculate the CUBIC area of the room (not square feet) by multiplying the length time the width x the height of the ceiling. This will tell you the volume of the air to be cleaned. As you look at each brand, they will tell you how much air the machine can moved (expressed in cubic feet of air per minute or cfm). Take the volume of air in the room and divide it by the cfm of the machine to tell you how many minutes to get one air exchange. You want to get at least 6 air exchanges per hour, so you don't want it to take more than 10 minutes for one exchange.

I personally use the Austin Air machines in my house because they have powerful motors that can clean the air (lots of air exchanges) they have a 5 year filter (saves in the long term) and they are made in the US of metal. I don't like machines made of plastic, and I don't want anything from China (sorry China). When my kids left home for school, they took their machines with them and they withstood the challenges of young adult living (that means they get sit on and otherwise abused as you will find out when your son gets to be much older). They aren't cheap, but they last (the unit in my bedroom was purchased at the end of 1998 and is still going strong).

I am going to give you a link to a great article that explains how all the different kinds of filters work and you can see what you think you need. From what you describe, I'd recommend HEPA. I'm also giving you a link to a site that rates different machines. They don't sell anything, so you know they aren't biased. Lastly, I'll give you a link to the machines that I have in my house.

It is easy to get confused with all the marketing materials, so don't let them mislead you.
