What do you think about this saying?

"More than one, bring a gun." Agree, disagree? I've been doing a lot of thinking about the pros and cons between empty hand techniques and modern weaponry. Feel free to share any thoughts you have on this quote.

Update:

Good answers. The way I interpreted this was if you are outnumbered, use your firearm. The saying is assuming you are already carrying one, which is common is crime infested areas or with gun enthusiasts.

I totally agree with the comments about needing the will to pull the trigger, why have it if you won't use it? Does the situation change for you if the person has extensive training in both martial arts and firearms?

I'll put it this way. The one and only time I was ever confronted by a guy with a gun, he got hurt, I didn't, and I allowed no shots to be fired. Gun does you no good if you can't get it out to use it. Also, bringing a weapon raised the bar to truly deadly, so like Kokoro pointed out, you better be ready to either kill, or die to resolve the problem.

@ Leo L, very good advice, take one hard, flee if possible, take the next if you have to.

This sounds like a plan. You are going somewhere where you are expecting to face more than one opponent. Why go there in the first place. I'd be going the other way, just to be on the safe side.

If I am ambushed by more than one that would take away the opportunity to plan in the first place to pack a gun so I probably wouldn't have a gun with me. So the saying is pointless.

However, if you are just contemplating empty hand techniques vs modern weaponry, the empty hand is clearly at a disadvantage. However there are few places I go where everybody carries a gun which would warrant that I too need to be armed. Most brawls are not planned and unarmed in which I would probably be good with my martial arts. Robberies are motivated by greed (they want money), not taking someone's life. So they can have the money, I am OK with that. That leaves a rather small chance that I would actually run into a situation where I would actually need a gun. If I would get into such a situation and had a gun and am taken by surprise would I have the chance to get to my gun in time to defend myself? That even further diminishes my chance to actually use the gun in self defense. Now that the chances to actually use the gun in self defense are really small it really would not be feasible for me to carry one. I also do not live in a high crime area nor is there a need for me to visit/go through such areas. I would keep a gun at home though if I lived in a rural area where it takes a long time for help to arrive.

Agree, disagree? It depends on the situation. If you are a police officer it would be silly not to carry a gun.

Kokoro has the most solid point; it doesn't matter if you carry a gun because can you trully take another's life? times have changed people have become more sensitive, and protected, there are no more Samurai dueals in the streets, no more executions, no more war (on our soil at least), no more burying our own, no more back yard fights o solve problems.......this world has become soft; 300 years ago you had a problem with someone you two had a duel to the death with barehands, or maybe weapons, and we would bring our children to watch and learn, but now theres even a drop of blood in a cartoon and everyone panics.....is it wise to carry a gun? yes, but whats the point of having that wsdom if you don't have the heart to apply the knowledge....that goes to all forms of life.

I have relatives in law enforcement. They carry guns all the time. I have never owned a gun. I disagree with your statement. It is an oversimplification of a complex issue. I have another saying, " feet are fancy, fists are fast." In an multiple attacker situation, where I had no alternative, I'd lunge at the primary bad guy and do one decisive thing. Martial arts has lots of one and done strikes. Just pick the one that suits the setup best and go for it. Repeat as needed.

It's a good idea to learn both, empty hand techniques, and how to use a gun.

In a courtroom a self defense plea is a very thin line. If you carry a gun and choose to use it, one needs to expect the possibility that you're ultimately choosing to kill the person you shoot at. If a group of people mug you they've obviously chosen the wrong path in life, but is that really worth killing them for?

I have to disagree with that saying. I don't think it's wise to bring a gun anywhere unless to a gallery, hunting trip or war. Everyday self defense to save your wallet or dignity... no way.

a gun is only good if your willing to pull the trigger.

how many people are willing to take another persons life, even when there's is in danger. most people would be more willing to if a close family member or there child was threaten but not always themselves
