How do the British pronounce "not"?

I am trying to learn Magyar/Hungarian, and it says that "a" sounds like Brit 'o' in 'not'.

Could you put it in terms of another word, or spell it using other letters? It's not like "ay" right? Is it like the 'a' in "happy" or "father" or something else?

Thank you!

In British pronunciation 'not' sounds like "nawt" rather than the standard American English pronunciation which is "naht'. To produce this sound, think of the exlcamation Aw! as in the expressions Aw, gee! or Aw, shucks! and that's pretty much what the British English vowel /aw/ sounds like.
