How do I get a job on a cruise ship?

I heard somebody say that the only way to get a job on a ship is to know somebody who works on one. Is this true? Is it worth trying? What are my chances? I am young, get decent grades, am very social, and work hard.

Go directly to each cruise company web site. You will often find it at the bottom of the web site under employment. Never, never apply through any job hunt type company as some of these are rip offs. You should never have to pay anyone to apply for a job. BTW, while cruise companies do hire some Americans, most of the employees are from third world countries. Something about the super long hours, no paid overtime and many weeks before you get a day off. You may want to read a book titled "Cruise Confidential".

No it is not true - but you need to have relevant work experience on land.

If you want to apply as busboy you must have worked as a waiter on land

If you want to apply as a receptionist you must have worked as a receptionist in a hotel on land

(most cases a minimum of 2 years)

check out the employment sections of the individual cruise lines for jobs and their requirements, as well as info on how to apply
