I applied for social security disability, and was denied?

I applied for social security disability. I received a letter stating that I was denied and the reason for their denial is: they believe that even though I am disabled I can work in some position. It also states that in the future should my condition worsen to reapply for benefits. I don't get. How can they say I'm disabled & still deny me benefits? By the way the nature of my disability is Ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a form of spondyloarthritis, which is a chronic, inflammatory arthritis and autoimmune disease. It mainly affects joints in the spine and the sacroiliac joint in the pelvis, and in my case has caused fusion of the spine. Should I get an attorney?

Update:

To fodaddy19: I too am aware that there are people out there with our disease that still manage to work. Believe me there is nothing more I would rather do than work for my paycheck like most people. I'm not looking to cheat the system or take advantage of my sickness. I worked for over 25 yrs. paying my taxes & ss just like everyone else. And as for my disability I was diagnosed with AS when I was in my late 20's. Years after going to countless drs. (within 10 yrs.) telling me everything from it's simple back ache to "It's all in my head". By the time I was properly diagnosed I had already too much irreversible damage to my spine where now I'm at the point where my back & neck are totally fuse, and have very limited mobility. I walk with a hunch posture & can no longer lift up my head as well as having restrictive lung defect. I've also been on all the same medication that you have as well as Remicade. Unfortunately I no longer have health insurance & had to stop my Remicade treatment

Update 2:

For Catholic Truth: I've never been on welfare. I worked most of my life from my late teens to about 3 yrs. ago.

Don't give up.It took me 17 years of fighting the system to finally get on SSDI. The key thing is "DON'T GIVE UP"

Try and find a DR who will back you & knows how to write a "true" report that is convincing enough to get you the SSDI.

They send out denials in hopes that you give up & stop.If you feel you have a good case, get a highly qualified attorney who deals with those on disability.

What you must do is appeal. You need to appeal right away. You can call the SS office and demand a more thorough reason. You will need that for the lawyer. its strange how they admitted she was disabled and didn't give a clear reason why she will not get benefits. It could be since she was working for the gov, she either didn't pay enough or she has too much experience and will be able to find another job that she can do. Maybe she needs to apply for SSI instead of SSDI. SSI will give a little less than ssdi would and you will be on a strict money alloweb=nce. Not allowing over 2,000 a month. Make the best out if it. But dont get too pesky with the office.

Hi, I Live in the UK, and had to have a Medical assesment ( with the new government refoms for disability). I have severe Fibromyalgia/CFS/ME, Asthma, IBS,Hypothyroidsm. I cannot walk without severe pain,I have to go out pushed in a wheelchair ( too weak to self propel it ), I'am housebound. I'am in severe pain 24/7..and have insomnia/sleep reversal. I have also had all my disability allowance taken away from me. They only gave me the lowest rate care when i did have it..now i have lost all of it after some stupid Medical assessor (ATOS Healthcare) said that he thought i was not disabled enough ,and told blatant lies on the medical form. My GP (Doctor)..has written me off as permanently disabled, and unfit for any kind of work. Hell , i cant even get out the front door without help.

I worked hard all my life..to be treated like this when iam so much in need is surely against human rights. I'am now appealing the descision (yet again) and taking it to a Tribunal, also i have the support from my Doctor and My MP.

All I can say..is appeal..and keep appealing the descision! Get as many Letters from specialist you can. My illness may even be Multiple sclerosis yet...that has not yet been descided by my nuerologist. ( sorry for any spelling mistakes...numb fingers..and fibrofog)

Suggest that you get a attorney that specializes in Social Security disabilities.

Everyone who is disabled is not entitled to SSDI or SSI. It is only people who are severely disabled. #1 Appeal the decision. #2 Talk to the doctors who provided information and ask them what they said. They might not have told SSA what you would think they would have said. It is the doctor's reports that are most important. You don't need a lawyer yet. First appeal.
