Is 30 minutes of exercise, 3 days a week, enough to lose weight?
So here it is, I am 28 years old, I fluctuate between 170-175 pounds on a 5'5-5'6 frame. I have started working out at Curves 3 days a week. For those of you who don't know how curves works, you have a series of hydraulic machines and cardio boards that you rotate around 2 times, for a total of 30 minutes. I am wanting to lose weight and get healthy for not only myself, but my children as well. We lost their father not long ago to an unhealthy lifestyle, which led to a blood clot in one of his legs....and yes, this scared me enough to get of my tush and do something about myself. I need to know if this is going to be enough of a workout to lose weight. (keep in mind, it's cardio and strength training) I can only go 3 days a week right now due to my schedule, but come Aug of 2011 I will be going 5 days a week! Thanks in advance, and only serious answers please. I need to know if I need to do more. Oh, and I eat nothing but grilled chicken, pork chops, etc. No red meats. Plenty of fruits and veggies, and drink a protein shake after my workouts with extra peanut butter and a whole banana added to it, as well as 2-3 Liters of water a day. Thanks again!
I don't really count my calories, but I do eat 5 SMALL meals per day, my shake is included as one of my meals.
I don't eat sweets/junk. No cakes, cookies, candies, chips, etc. I lost 45 pounds alone just changing my eating habits. I have been stuck at 170-175 for about a year. From all the great answers I have got as of now, I will start incorporating walking/jogging into my workout program everyday! My goal is to get fit enough to do my P90X program. I used to be a very muscular size 2 before having kids. Pathetic, I know!

The key to losing what ( and fat) is to burn off more calories than you take in. When you eat, you intake calories. Calories is energy and if you dont use up all the energy you take in it gets stored as fat. So in order to get rid of fat and lose wait you have to watch how much calories you take in versus how much you burn off. So as long as the work outs you do but enough calories and build muscle mass you will be fine. I would recommend working out for atleast 1 hour those three days and do full body workouts and cardio as that burns the most calories.

you know the recipe to lose weight: calories out > calories in.
how many calories a day do you eat? your protein shake sounds like it has more calories than you're burning in your workouts.
are you actually losing weight? you need to weigh yourself and monitor your progress. i weigh myself every sunday morning, and have lost 130 pounds since november 2009. i record it on a spreadsheet.
fwiw: i work out 5 times a week, 45 minutes on an exercise bike. i try for 1200 to 1400 calories a day. i eat anything i want, just in moderation.

It depends as to how you make your exercise. I mean there are some types of exercise that requires a lot of calories you you'll burned a lot there are also others that won't.

Like it or loathe the idea, horseradish, which comes from exactly the same family as wasabi, can actually help you dissolve your fat and prevent hunger pangs, claim researchers from your University of Copenhagen. Spread slightly on your sarnies, instead of the usual ketchup, for a diet effect.

Chew gum. Sometimes just chewing something with negligible calories within it is all it takes. If you can handle it, chew a bit of gum for one hour and drop 11 calories. Remember to pick the sugar-free variety.
