What makes people believe that god is real?

It's a pernicious meme, spread from one human to the next through intimidation and indoctrination.

Possibly several reasons.

1) Never questioning what they learned as a child.

2) A personal numinous experience.

3) Looking at various pieces of evidence, and deciding it is completely reasonable to believe such.

4) Being unable to believe that everything came from nothing (against all the laws of physics).

5) Being aware of His presence.

6) Having prayers answered.

There may be others, but I think that this covers something of most people's experience.

People have various reasons for wanting to believe there is a God. But more and more it stems from the fact that people need something outside of the limitations of this World to hold onto. They need hope, Lets be honest with ourselves despite a significant rise in living standards and advances in technology, people are not getting happier. Indeed a study by the Financial Times found that happiness levels in the UK have stopped rising since the fifties. What has increased in modern times ae levels of depression and drug addiction. With increased levels of unhappiness people are really starting to ask what is the meaning of life ? This happens particularly at times when we are going through acute pain and suffering. People need to feel that there is something else, a better future ultimately. I don't believe that even the most militant of atheists want to believe that when they die that it is truly the end.

well, apart from believing holy books, such as the bible and qur'an, those who believe in god have personal reasons and experiences. For example, about eight months ago, my sister was dying in hospital through an overdose. she had acute liver failure and was in critical condition, and I was scared, as was the rest of my family and our close friends. I prayed properly, for probably the first time in my life, and my sister survived. As the months passed, I prayed for peace, love, faith and contentment, and found them all. I was filled with peace as I prayed and there was a kind of tingling feeling throughout my body - God answers all prayers, be it yes, maybe or no, and no matter what answer it is, if you believe God is answering, then you believe God is real and find contentment. I give this message to those who don't believe and want proof:

You don't need proof - you need faith!

Our world and yourself are too perfectly built to have been developed by cosmic forces as believed by many scientists.Tell me, can you explain life or even the human mind? Do you believe the devil exists? Can nature alone create something from nothing as believed by several scientists? Whose iq is high enough to perfectly author a book like the bible? Can you explain miracles? Don't we have historical evidence about biblical facts like Noah's flood, great cities like Babylon,prophetic scrolls like those written by prophet Isaiah, Exodus chariots in the Red sea? Which planet in our solar system is as gifted as the earth?,not even our companion the moon has a word to say. Believe it or not, God is real and he always watches over us.

People think it people lots of other do and generation before them did It doesn't take much understanding to realize it is all a made up story because of Scientific understanding however in the past people had no other explanation for our creation but we now do less and less people believe in religion

I can't get past the evidence. I know a lot of ppl say, from both sides, there is no evidece! But we r just spouting our own agenda. Seriously if you really get in and study the history and science involved in our beliefs, we do have evidence. May I suggest a few books. Lee Strobel a previous Atheist, he attended Yale where he got a masters degree in Law and was also an award winning legal editor of the Chicago tribue. took on the claims against the bible. He interviewed Highly acclaimed scientists, historians, and theologians, both Christian and liberal and wrote two books. "The case for creation" and "The case for the real Jesus." If you are really serious about evidence for your side read these. what do you have to loose.

All people for all of time have been imbued with the life question - "Why am I here?"

It is God's way of making us search for the answer.

But the only way we can ever know that God is really real, is when He shows up in your life.

Then, there is no going back!

Usually an experience of being in His presence. A few may arrive at that decision through intellectual means but in any case you need to have a personal relationship with Jesus to be a true follower.

Maybe they are easily persuaded and simply read some sort of Bible-like book and believed it, grew up in a theistic family, were pressured, or simply want to. I don't care to be honest WHY they do. As long as they leave me alone, whatever makes them happy is fine by me.
