Why the Spanish Franciscans kept the fruitless missionary work in Texas in the late 17th and 18th Centuries?

It is true that they succeeded to convert thousands of Coahuitlecan Indians in the San Antonio area but that was all the success they had, the Missions of East Texas and the Pecos area were a total failure

Update:

You evidently know too little of the history of Texas, since Texas was a provice of the New Spain the Spaniards explored it and found no gold so Texas became neglected and little populated, there was not enough soldiers to, as you said, use the bayonet in the pursue of Christianizing Indians.

Also the following East Texas Franciscan Missions failed to convert one single Hasiai indian:

SanJose de los Nazoris, built on 1716

Santisimo nombre de Maria 1716

San Francisco de los Texas 1690

San Ildefonso 1749

San Francisco Javier 1746

Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria 1749

Nuestra Senora de la Luz 1756

Do i have to go on?

Outta Touch is wrong, no offense meaning, the Viceroys of new Spain would just build forts and missions to secure the area of East Texas fearing the intrusion of the French from Louisiana, who had strong trading with the Caddos and in less amount with the Karankawas.

There are HUNDREDS of BOOKS about the Spanish in the Southwest and the MISSIONS in the Southwest.. and I suggest you read a few before you make conclusions.

You don't even seem to know that the FIRST MISSIONARIES in Texas were JESUIT and not FRANCISCAN and I will let YOU find out why the POPE threw the Jebbies out of Texas.

It was the RELIGION that actually brought down the Spanish because the FRENCH were only interested in TRADING with the Indians.. and the SPANISH wanted to CHRISTIANIZE the indians and were will to save their souls at the point of a BAYONETS or the end of a ROPE.

The missions WERE a success in that the whole purpose of a Missions was to COLLECTIVIZE all the Indians in a given area and use their labor to support the Spanish Incursion into the Southwest. The missions only FAILED because the WEATHER CHANGED and the DROUGHT that lasted for over 200 YEARS resulted in food shortages and civil strife.. when the Indians saw that GOD and GEEUS were no Better at fulfilling THEIR needs than the OLD GODS of the Indians.. they chased the Spanish back to Mexico
