How to download video codecs for Linux?

I have .avi .mp4 and many other different video files that just won't play on my Ubuntu 10.10 and I have just switched to the OS, how do I download the codecs that will let me play these videos? Step-by-step would be so useful...

Thanks a lot,

Max

P.S Are there any Linux video players that already have these codecs installed?

You need to get "ubuntu-restricted-extras" from your Software Center or through your Synaptic package manager (they are in your menus).

Also, download the Ubuntu Tweak program from the web and through it enable the Medibuntu software repository, then update your software package list and install extra codecs.

Also, enable the third-party software options from your Software Sources window (also in the menus), so you can see the Ubuntu Partners repositories and install things like Sun Java and Adobe Flash.

And yes, VLC is a good program.

You need to enable Restricted Formats for multimedia playback

Change to Linux Mint which is the 'tamed' version of Ubuntu. It contains all the codecs on the disc.

VLC packages most of the codecs you will need in it's distibution.

You can also install ffmpeg and the gstreamer package for ffmpeg to get it working under Mplayer.

(all of this through the software center)
