Most Officers never served enlisted for starters. The Army gets new Officers 1 of 4 ways:

    1. The US Military Academy at West Point (about 20%)

    2. Army ROTC (about 70%)

    3. Army OCS (less than 10%)

    4. Direct Commission (for MDs, Lawyers and Chaplains) (less than 1%)

    Take your pick

No, you do not need to become enlisted first. Most officers has never served in the enlisted ranks. Do not worry about your great strategic mind; the chance for you doing strategy planning will be rather small.
