What is the harm when somebody has a scanned copy of my passport?

I just sent a scanned copy of my passport (black and white) to an untrusted company and am now worrying that they may steal my identity for frauds. I did not send any credit card or account info, but i am freaked out that something will go wrong one day. It is certain that they aim for money and I immediately stopped responding once I became suspicious. Is there anything I can do to protect my identity? I am really freaked out.

More worrying is that these were criminal gangs who will just make a fake passport in your name, using your passport number, and a criminal's photo. I would contact your local passport office, report your passport as stolen, and get a new one. That way if anyone else tries to travel using your passport number, it will be flagged in the system

What exactly do you mean by "an untrusted company"?

Change your passwords and keep an eye on your accounts and credit history. That's all I can say.
