What laptop should I get for college?

Well, I'm going to be heading off to college when fall rolls around and I'm starting to look for a laptop.

I've been looking around and I found a couple that are pretty good, but I'm not sure if suitable enough for college.

Should I just get a nice netbook with decent specs and long battery life?

Or should I get a regular laptop with good specs but heavier/shorter battery life?

I did manage to find a good deal on a laptop..

http://www.staples.com/Toshiba-Satellite-L655-S515...

P6200 Processor, 500 GB hard drive, 4 GB RAM, 5 hours battery life, Windows 7, and 15.6' screen for less than $400 (with sale). Only problem is that I'd have to buy it very, very soon because it is a reduced price.

Is that a good deal? Is it worth it?

I will be living on campus and I don't have a car so I'd ride a bike/walk/public transportation.

Or go with a good netbook? Any links to a netbook with good specs would be nice.

Update:

Yeah, I've always heard that Toshiba wasn't very reliable. I was looking more towards Asus than anything.

Definitely not getting a Mac. I think it's overrated and overpriced. I'll spend half as much money on another laptop and still have just as good of a computer. If I had a $1000+ budget, I'd get a cheap desktop for my dorm room and a netbook on top of that...

But honestly, my budget is only around $500.

Yes that Toshiba is a very good deal. 380 is a great price for the specs they give you. Everything seems good the average college student. Toshiba's are pretty good too, I've owned 2 over the last 3 years never had any problems with them. The only issue with you may be the battery life, with this specific model it gets roughly 4 hours, if that seems good for your uses then I would say go ahead. But since your going to be a college student you might not be around an outlet in your classes, so maybe a netbook may be a better choice one that has a 10 hour battery. But personally I would get the toshiba, netbooks are kind of hard to type on generally especially when your typing a 7 page paper.

Just a note to dj h comment, toshiba is ranked above asus and dell and tied with sony for customer satisfaction for the year of 2010. http://www.laptopmag.com/mobile-life/scores-by-bra...

Do not buy Toshiba, Compaq/hp, or Gateway/acer laptops. They all have bad ratings and their quality assurance is not the greatest. Simple sony vaio's or, possibly a Dell or Asus would be a better choice for you to use in this instane.

Netbooks, while more convienient than laptops just dont have the same processing power as normal laptops do. they are smaller and more compact, so that means that the small parts have less efficiency. Plus, if it breaks, you cant fix it for less than what it is worth, it is a disposable investment.

I would say, though.... go to dell.com for a good selection fo baseline laptops. you want to buy it from the provider if you can for two main reasons. Warranty, and installation cd's. If you buy the computer from the dealer, they give you the installation CDs for everything that comes on your computer. So fi anything happens, you can just pop in a CD, get alittle help from a computer friend, and your back online.

If you want problem free and quality laptops stick with Mac Book Pro. Even a 13" will do you good for the entire 4 years of college and much more. You can go with Mac Book Air and that depends on how you want to use it. Internet, music, docs, pics, videos then either would be good for you.

I do not recommend Windows versions - because I can assure you that not only the quality sucks, but you will into issues with Win7. If it has to be a Win version of laptop - stick with Win XP. Most Netbooks come with Win XP or Linux versions and they are cheap. I have one by ASUS which is good enough for most of the use, but has problems with the battery. Most Netbooks and laptops - do not have good battery life, but good ones last the day depending on the use.

My Mac gets me the entire day with one full charge of use.
