Round one has been completed. What did you learn?

Round one has been done and dusted, and some very interesting facts have come about already. Hers what I learnt from round one.

ST Kilda; Will struggle this season as once again they failed in another close one against Geelong. Add this to the mental pressure of failure in four Finals in 12 months and it could well be a long year for the Saints.

Port; Well drilled side. If not for their poor ball control the margin would have been a lot closer. The magpies would have been sweating bolts at three quarter time.

Richmond; If they lose Reiwoldt they are in serious trouble. When the Blues left him alone during the third quarter he shined. Once they shut him down the tigers had nothing. Hardwick will not be coaching them next season as this talented band of youngsters should be way better than they are. Too many mistakes, and simple errors.

Carlton. Play like this against the stronger sides and they will lose by a hundred points every time. ratten is on shaky ground.

Geelong. As I predicted last season, Selwood would get seriously injured by the way he ducks into tackles. It is sad cause he is good enough not to use cheap tactics to win free kicks.

Melbourne. Top six finish looms for them this year. They showed a lot of fight and courage to come from behind and nearly snatch victory against the Swans.

Essendon; Now have the defence to match their flamboyant and fast paced attacking style of recent years. Knights inability to teach the bombers defence is what cost him his job, and Hird was well aware of this. They are going to be the headache side all season.

Those are my thoughts on the first round, and how I see the season panning out. By the way I tipped six and a draw how did you go. Cheers

Update:

Hey Shifty, good summing mate but it is not my first question. I just like to wait a bit before asking too much. There are many excellant questions posted on here I might not be in the same league.

Its a good overview of round one but. you yourself should know that it is a long March to September. pardon me for steeling that quote from the Magpie army member recruiting office.

So far i see 3 coaches jobs on the line. if their teams don't improve. Brisbane are shot with 2 of their best players Jonathan Brown & Brent Staker sitting on the sidelines now for a while. bottom 4 now looks a certainty.

Michael Jamison would have done a better job on Riewaldt. but he has been suspended. Carlton's playing list depth still gives me the creeps. Thornton is as weak as p*ss. i cant believe that he wasn't delisted. & im more disgusted that he actually gets a game. that's a puzzle that i will never figure out with Carlton. there is one thing that you can be guaranteed of here. if Essendon finnish the season above the Blues. the Ratts will get the sack! nothing surer than that.

The Western Bulldogs were, without doubt the biggest disappointment of the round. Rodney Eade has certainly got his work cut out now. if that team is even going to get a sniff of some September action. but you know the old saying in footy. your opposition only play as well as you let them. the doggies work rate was nothing shorter than being pathetic in this game. shame shame shame!

There is still a ? hanging over the Dee's. a draw against the Swans is better than a loss. but i think it was more of the Swans fading in the last Quarter. than Melbourne doing better than them.

As for Geelong & St Kilda. these 2 teams have aging playing lists. they are #1 & 2 in the comp. if these 2 teams get some serious injury's over the coming weeks. i don't think that they have the depth to cover the players sitting on the sidelines. this will the biggest concerns for both of their coaches.

The upside of the round was the sparkling games played by the new debutant's. that got games this weekend. too many to name. but you know the players that i speak of. some real talent unearthed i tell ya.

Cant wait till next Saturday for the Carlton V Gold Coast game. my seat is already reserved.

BTW i noticed that this is the 1st question you have asked. its great to participate. i look forward to seeing some more.

    cheers.

First up my hunch that with so many youngsters in travelling teams for R1 that home teams would dominate so not surprised that the only exception was Bris. - a/c injury.

Port surprised me by putting a scare into the Pies for 3/4 & I've elevated them.

BL - got sick of looking for their first possible win.

Rich. - same old same old.

Carl. - If they could only get 20 points over Rich. look sus. all year

Crows - Impressed but it was the Anniv. Game etc

Ess. - I got slaughtered on here last year for suggesting a top 8 & borderline 4 finish but I'll stick to my guns - they are what the game should all be about in my books.

WB - BIG problems predicted & possibly the big THUD as the land on top of the Lions.

The rest I still have ??? over for a raft of reasons and YES I didn't see a GF performance in C'wood

    so they are still ???.

    R2 is a teaser !!

The concussion rule can have an impact on the sub rule.

Umpires haven't improved from last season.

The sub rule is needs to be improved. We saw on the weekend sides lost more than one player to injury and had other players not allowed to return to the field because of concussion.

    Preseason form can be misleading.

Player availability can impact on a teams performance.

Hawthorn's defense is their Achilles heel.

Richmond have improved but probably won't make the 8.

Collingwood have improved by adding a few players while others gained confidence from last seasons premiership.

i learnt that joel selwood is a remarkable man.. he apologised to his teammates after the match for letting them down after that horror crash with farren raye.. what a great footballer and role model. he is a great advocate for football in a time where footballing role models arent seeming to make the grade (st kilda schoolgirl fiasco, fev, ben cousins)

i agree with you Nick, Selwood is an awesome guy, great role model.

i dont want essendon to but i want the mighty cats to. :)
