Is Progressive Rock the "Baseball" of the Rock World?

Just a random thought that was bouncing through my head whilst out driving one morning....

Baseball is:

Supposedly the "Thinking Man's" Sport

Put's on the pretense of physicality, but requires little real athleticism (unlike soccer or hoops)

Usually mind numbingly boring, broken by brief moments like Homeruns, triple plays and the like.

The season is WAAAAAAAAY too long

Has become a bloated mockery of itself (way too stuck in tradition and look at CC Sabathia)

Darth is in love with it.

Only a small handful actually care about it anymore, and they tend to be fanatical about it. (Everyone else watches football, cuz it's way more physical AND more mental.)

Whereas Prog Metal and Rock:

Is supposedly "Thinking Man's" Rock and Metal

Put's on a pretense of aggressiveness and inventiveness

Is usually mindnumbing boring, broken by the occasional crazy solo

Songs tend to be WAAAAAAAY too long

Has become a bloated mockery of itself, and is seldom still "Progressing" anywhere

Darth loves it

Only appeals to a handful of lunatic fringe fanatics... everyone else wants something that actually has some emotion.

=P

MQ: Thoughts?

MQ2: Can you make make some Music to Sports SIMILE's?

Update:

@Iron Fist.. in yer dreams Burt! I played both. Way more strategy to football, way more athleticism required. And WAAAAAAY harder on the body.

Update 2:

@ the Brain.. tell us how you REALLY feel.. =P

Update 3:

@Captain Futility.... ooooohhhhhhhh.. good good comparo! Except.. excuse my non British ignorance..is Cricket EVER punctuated by moments of excitement? o_O

Update 4:

@Kelly Wholigan... LOL at the opening line.....

BTW, I am not anti-Baseball, though I do feel the season is WAAAAY too long. I still root for the Cubs and the As, and was totally rooting for the Giants (my hometown team) in the Series (first time I watched in years), I just happen to prefer Football, Soccer and College Hoops a lot more.

Update 5:

@kls81 ...Hockey is Pop Punk perhaps? =P

Scripted pseudo- tough guy mentality, overshadowing a glossy product?

( I actually vastly preferred the hockey in the Olympics where all the idiotic "throwing down" was banned and actual surprisingly good hockey erupted. lol)

Update 6:

@ Rosiee'xo .. just an observation.. what is more narrow minded.. an obviously tongue in cheek question ribbing a good friend (aka Darth) or a judgmental answer based off one question of which the context obviously eluded you?

Update 7:

*KC considering to hit a golf ball well and properly actually takes more skill than a baseball, I don't think it says much about physicality as it does basic hand eye coordination.. which is also needed for video games. How physical do we consider those, again?

Update 8:

there is a reason there are a lot more "great" pitchers and batter out there than Quarterbacks after all. =)

Update 9:

@KC.. yes. the golf ball ISN'T moving. That is the point. And yet it is harder than hitting a pitch. I must assume you haven't really played either sport? And you certainly know little or nothing about football, or you would realize that your "ape" insinuations are far off the mark. =)

MQ: Would like to suggest classical = baseball, besides the bloated mockery and pretense stuff. It definitely is long (though not boring) and appeals to many people, but includes a fringe that prides itself on being the intelligentsia.

MQ 2: What does that make all the singer-songwriter stuff I listen to? (If someone says 'competitive poker,' I will hunt you down! ;) )

Which is hockey? The only sport I follow is hockey. Something loud and banging. Please, not Nickelback or Andrew W.K. or something.

Also, my dad curls, so what (Easy Listening *cough cough*) would you suggest for shuffleboard on ice -- I mean, curling?

Source(s): @ peaches: I'd say "Them's fighting words," but I'd just be playing into your hand. But yeah, hockey is surprisingly athletic and occasionally even graceful without the goons. You have heard Warren Zevon's 'Hit Somebody!' already, right?: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PokDj9u09A

If hitting a tiny ball coming at 90 miles per hour is a 'pretense' of physicality, I don't know what to call the mindlessness of soccer and football etc...

I guess those would be the 'metal' of sports; misguided aggression turned into an industry. Then again, metal is pretty much a sport at this point too.

    * The golf ball ain't moving, and hand-eye coordination is part of physicality, unless you relegate "physicality" to merely the realm of how hard one monkey can bash into another monkey.

Not sure what you mean by "more "great" pitchers" etc.

Hahahahahaha, I completely disagree with the 'mindnumbing boring' part and the fact that you think some of the songs are too long. Long songs can be a bit tedious, but prog rock/metal can be really amazing. Though, I see where you're coming from with the comparison and you make some interesting points but you seem really narrow minded. Then again, I have a diverse taste in music and I respect your opinion, even if it is stupid xD

    MA...

While there's a lot more than a pretense of physicality involved in flat out tear-azz chasing down a ball and climbing a vertical wall to rob some schmuck of a homer. Or busting a windshield out in the parking lot 500 feet away with some poor sap's hanging curve ball (I know, I did it) I will grant you that baseball can be awfully boring at times, and doesn't quite require the stamina (But actually I would argue it requires more endurance) than basketball does, or the brute physical power that football does. (Unless you're a power hitter)

Well now I don't often disagree with you, but I will here. There was no pretense at all to Prog's creativity from about 67 through 77. During that era bands like Yes, ELP, and Rush pushed and redefined Rock music to it's absolute limits and beyond. All the bands you and I venerate like Death, Metallica, Opeth, and Obscura and built on the foundation bands like Rush laid with epic albums like 2112 and Yes with Close To the Edge. During that era Prog crackled and scintillated, and was rarely if ever boring. Now I was just thinking about this earlier and here is where your point holds credence. After many of these bands pushed it as far as it could go (Rush's Hemispheres is the perfect example, it's one of the most wildly creative albums of all time, but all the band members admit it's literally excruciating to play because of it's hideous complexity) by the late 70s they were all painted into a corner, they could progress no further and had to all alter their sound. Rush embraced new sounds and techniques and not only stayed relevant, but produced a string oif tight, hard hitting masterpieces...but the glorious complexity that they had embraced was mostly gone, and the albums were only loosely Prog. Then you had some other formerly great Porg giants that took different approaches. Genesis went Percussive Pop with smashing sales to show for it. ELP turned into the cringe inducing self parody of which you speak with the abortion known as Love Beach. Yes turned moribund and stale for several years before reinventing themselves as 80s Power Pop. Some band members turned side projects like the superb Prog supergroup Asia into Pop gold; But none of them ever got the sharp edge of creativity they once had back as far as making Progressive Rock goes. The genre peaked in the mid 70s. But as I said...what a peak it was.

MA2: Yeah, Punk is Rugby, without doubt

    no, no, no

if any sport can be likened to prog, it's got to be test-match cricket.

what other game can go on for five days, and still end as a draw?

    edit:

punctuated by moments of excitement? of course it is! even the draws can be exciting, as it can often be a see-saw battle between the two teams.

i've just quickly thought of a few more:

tennis = screamo - no explanation necessary

rugby = sludge - bogged down in mud, but with side-steps of beauty down the wing

    edit2:

    music required - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmPMMitJDYg

MQ:Me love me prog / tech death. That's all I'm gunna say.

Wtf bro? Pop punk for hockey? Noo way. As a true Canadian I have to disagree with you .. but I will agree that Olympic hockey is much more exciting as it is played at a much faster pace.

    Rugby - thrash metal

    MMA- Death metal

HA Someone called PEACHES "narrow minded" ... Good joke,i LAWL'd

  • See firstly i dont understand baseball at all...never tried to bcz i found that the most boring thing in the world...and i cannot and do not say the same for progressive music :)

MA2 : music to sports?hmm...i dunno..ur baseball to prog was quite entertaining..but i dont agree with a few points :P but here's some music related to cartoon :

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RztR4E12dGU

***how about Equestrian to rap?! just goes on n on n makes u wonder when its going to stop....

****Wow! somebody called KP narrow minded! dude u have a criminal record now :P

I disagree. You need balls to play baseball. :)

Listening to smooth jazz is a lot like watching golf, only the elderly do it.

  • Wait a minute..."thinking man's sport" and Yankee fans? That's kind of an oxymoron, KP...Sorry, (((Stella))))

I'd have to compare progressive rock to chess:

Murray Head "One Night in Bangkok"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kY11rAQsI9k

I <3 baseball, I'm one of the extreme fanatics...GO RED SOX!!!!!

EDIT @ Peaches--I'd personally prefer the season to be longer, but that's just me :P LOLOLOL

    i hate sports

    sports of all kinds

baseball is just so boring you hit a ball and run around

basketball is just running around throwing a ball in a hoop

football is like watching dumb dogs play fetch

hockey is just fighting and endless ice skating

i hate mindless sports fans i was on a train last year after the blackhawks won the stanley cup and some chick asked me if i was happy that the hawks won and i was like no she asked me why and i was like i didnt get nothing out of it i didnt benifit the only one who benifits is the owners of the teams

i used to work at ups when jordan came back and this guy i knew was like im not coming to work so i can watch the bulls and i was like you think jordan would miss work to watch you come do your job?

i also live down the street from where the white sox play and its murder walking down the street when a game is progress or getting off the tarin when that happens and all the drunken idiots

i do admit on friday nights when they have fireworks its nice to look at but i hate sports always have always will never seen the point of them

this concludes my rant against sports

progressive rock you mean like tool? yeah tool is ok im not a huge fan of them to me they are hit or miss they have some great songs but most of their albums arent taht good
