distribute the negative in front of the ( )'s which changes all the signs within ( )'s:
-5x^4 + x^2 - x^3 - 8x^2 + x
combine like terms (same exponents):
- 5x^4 - x^3 - 7x^2 + x
that's it! ;)

First, multiply the negative through. Then you have
-5x^4 + x^2 - x^3 - 8x^2 + x
Then combine the terms that are alike.
-5x^4 - x^3 -7x^2 - x)
That's it.
