What to do with my chickens when I am out of town?

For those of you who have chickens that roam during the day and return to the coop at night what do you do while you are away on vacation? Do you just leave them locked in the coop until you get back and then continue to let them out during the day and back at night or do you have someone stop by and close the door at night?

Allowing chickens to free range with no one to oversee them is very risky, having them locked in a coop is safe but the coop should have room enough for your birds to feel comfortable.Goes without saying that someone will be in charge of feeding, watering, collecting eggs & generally keeping an eye on their well being.Birds will be only too happy to resume free ranging on your return.

This strategy works for short vacations, however if you will be away for a long period, you will need to think of more permanent measures.

A safe accessible yard would be the ideal answer for day time freedom.

My chickens have a coop and a yard. So if we were to go on vacation I would leave them locked up in their yard & coop and have a neighbor come feed and water them and collect the eggs. When I get home I'd let them out again.

Locking them up would probably be safer then have them roaming around defenselessly. Just make sure their are small holes or vent to where fresh air can come in so that they do not suffocate or die of heat.
