why is a lieutenant general higher than a major general?

in normal rank, a major is higher then a lieutenant,---but a lieutenant general is higher then a major general----it doesn't seem logical.

    It's not logical if you put it that way, but that probably wasn't the logic behind it when the ranks were originally named. What I wonder is, why is this in Geography??
