Yoga is a mental excercise as well as a physical excercise.
The best technique for any person contemplating to take up yoga is not to contemplate but to concentrate - on how yoga and its techniques is escalating into a world wide epidemic where yoga exercises are helping ailing patients and others who seek peace of mind.

Yoga is a physical form of prayer. You transcend the your petty, daily woes when you do those Yoga poses, try to clear your mind, chant the word Om (which is all about transcendence), and give thanks afterward.
Yoga is also largely secularised now. It's an excellent way to exercise, builds up core strength and flexibility, and it does clear your mind. I wouldn't be too worried about it if you want to do Yoga but you're not Hindu.

Depends on whose doing the considering. I don't, I think it looks great (if you have the body for it). Having been born into a body in which it was congenitally impossible for me to touch my toes, I think of it as a spectator sport.

Originally, yes.
It's been largely secularized as an exercise regime, although some Catholics still get pretty upset about it.

Yes and no. It can be practiced as part of Hinduism, and it can be practiced as no part of religion.

It can depend on the religion.
