Can you still buy new Dell computers with Windows XP?

I have a client who needs a new computer, and he's partial to Dells. Every computer in his small business is running XP, except for the Windows 2003 server. He doesn't want to change the networking or anything else for Windows 7- his office software applications are versions which are a few years old anyway. Is it possible to get new Dell computers through any channels with XP or the XP downgrade option- like the Business outlet or anything? Or would he have to go with a custom built machine if he wants XP?

Windows XP has reached "End of Life" and manufacturers such as Dell are not permitted to package/bundle it anymore.

You can however, purchase "open licensing" from Microsoft. The license would be for Windows 7 and the license would legally permit you to use the last two operating systems. The same goes with other products such as MS Office.

It would seem like open licensing would be an expensive solution. I recommend if you purchase any new computers you can look on the Dell Outlet and some of the computers for sale no doubt would have XP installed. Another site to checkout would be www.tigerdirect.com

I hate saying this, but you may have to buy an xp disk from a computer shop in order to have a code. If you ever do an upgrade, there is a chance you will need it again. The last I checked it cost around $100. I hope that I am wrong and that someone else has a different idea, but, I know that this way will work, because I had to do it myself a few years back.

You can go with a Dell but you'll have to buy an XP license and use and XP disc on it. I do IT work as well, there is nothing that you really need to change to use Windows 7 in your enviroment. The only thing we have ran in to is some older Apps don't like 7 but for those you can download and install XP mode. It creates a virtul XP machine on the Win7 machine to run the applications from. Once the App is installed to the XP mode machine simply put the App shorcut on the wind0ws & desktop, when clicked it runs the app from the virtual XP install without the client even knowing it.

The guy who installed Windows XP on your machine never activated windows and probably used an illegal copy of it. After the 30 days is up Windows XP will only bring up that register now box and you will not be able to use it. You will probably have to buy a copy off of the internet, its still $100 - $150 dollars depending upon where you buy it from.
