Are the Red Sox really a better team (on paper) than the Yankees?

I know there was a lot of hype about the Red Sox and their big offseason pickups in free agency, and about how the Yankees were largely silent in free agency, and missed out big time on Cliff Lee, but if you look at the rosters, I think the Yankees may still look like a better team.

1B: Yankees have Teixeira, and I'd take him over Adrian Gonzalez anyday. Tex is Gold Glove caliber. Tex doesn't get the nod by much here, though.

2B: Yanks have Robby Cano, BoSox have Dustin Pedroia. Probably a wash there, since Pedroia won MVP a few years back and a lot of people are picking Cano to win it this year.

SS: Yankees have Jeter, Sox have Scutaro. That's not even a comparison. Scutaro is a career .267 hitter and Jeter is arguably one of the top 3 shortstops to ever play the game.

3B: I'd take A-Rod over the Youk here.

C: Catcher may be a wash, Yanks are starting Russell Martin and have Jorge Posada to come off the bench occasionally.

DH: I think I'd give Ortiz the nod over Jorge Posada, but Ortiz fell off pretty significantly after the sterioids allegations. I wouldn't be surprised to see a big season from Big Papi though. Still, I trust Jorge to come up with clutch knocks whenever he's needed. He won't blow you away with power or average, but he doesn't have to with the lineup the Yankees have.

I think the Yankees have a decisive advantage in infielders, and the Yankee infield is probably the best in the game.

The Red Sox outfield may be a bit better than the Yankees here:

CF: Yankees have Curtis Granderson, Sox have Jacoby Ellsbury. Ellsbury missed a lot of last year, and will likely come back pretty well this year, but I'd take Granderson any day, no question.

LF: The Sox have Carl Crawford here, and the Yanks send out Brett Gardner. Carl Crawford is unquestionably one of the most dangerous players in the game. I like Gardner's hustle, and the fact that he can steal a lot of bases, like Crawford, but it's Carl Crawford, no doubt about it.

RF: This matchup may be a wash. JD Drew for BoSox or Nick Swisher for the Yanks. I think Swisher is a better clubhouse guy, and can put up pretty decent numbers, but JD Drew puts up similar numbers as well. Toss up, slight edge to Swish.

Pitchers: I think the Red Sox, with Lester, Buccholz, Beckett, Matsuzaka, and Lackey are more solid 1 through 5, but I think the Yankees have a better top end. Sabathia is the best starter for the Yanks, and better than Jon Lester, in my opinion. Hughes will be solid, Burnett can be horrible or brilliant, it all depends, that's a huge question mark, and the Yankees have unproven Ivan Nova, and are rounded out by Freddy Garcia. I have more confidence in Boston's rotation, just a bit.

Bullpen, I think it's pretty close too. The Yanks have the greatest closer ever in Rivera, and Rafael Soriano is awesome as well. Joba Chamberlian is a big question mark. Papelbon is a great closer for Boston though, and they're pretty solid with Bard and Wakefield back there as well. Bobby Jenks though, I'm not so sure. The White Sox dumped him for a reason. I heard he has an alcohol problem...

So there it is. I think the Yankees, although they're older, are still a bit better (at least on paper). Only time will tell who is the better team, though.

Update:

I understand that being good on paper has nothing to do with how well a team performs in the season. But, since we haven't seen enough out of either team to make a fair judgment on which one is better, I was just saying that even after Boston's offseason free agent binge, the Yankees are still better.

They're a much better team on paper. But that doesn't really mean anything.

I agree with everything except for Cano vs. Pedroia comparison. Maybe I am biased because Pedroia cost me about 600 clams one time as the Sox were the last team in my parlay and they were playing the dreaded T.B. Rays. Boston had a 5-3 lead at the end of 7 innings. The Rays got 2 in the 8th to make it 5-5. In the top of the 9th the Sox rallied, they had runners on 2nd and 3rd with Pedroia at the plate. I was saying all the things that gamblers say when they are close to a big payout, like: Please God!!! Come-on Baby!!!, Just One Time!!!! Well Pedroia popped out to 3rd basemen Longoria, and as often happens in baseball, the player that gets the last out of the inning leads off the home half. Longoria did and hit the first pitch into the left field seats for a home run!!! So much for the big payout. Anyway Cano is much better player than Pedroia.

I strongly disagree at 1B. Adrian Gonzalez, while not as good a fielder as Tex, is a very good fielder, and probably a better hitter. Along with Miguel Cabrera and Pujols, Gonzalez is one of the best hitters in the game.

    Second base is a wash.

Third base is close but I'd give Rodriguez the nod.

    Catcher is about even.

DH, I'd go with Ortiz over Posada

Short, Jeter definitely but Jeter is an overrated fielder and is getting older, and Scutaro is still a decent player

CF: I'd take Ellsbury over Granderson although they are about even. Granderson is a better hitter but Ellsbury is a better fielder and runner

RF: even, both are good power hitters with good OBP

    LF: Crawford over Gardner, definitely

Pitchers; I agee the Sox are better 1-5, but when the pitchers are at their best, the Yankees are better. However, due to Sabathia, Burnett, and Hughes' inconsistency, I'd go with the Sox for pitching.

Bullpen is even. I think Rivera is a better closer than Pap easily, but Pap is still good. Bard is better than Soriano. Wake adds an interesting aspect to the staff and Jenks, when healthy, is a very, very good pitcher.

I personally think the Sox are better on paper.

Baseball isn't played on paper so I don't pay any attention to how good someone is on paper. I think the Yankees are still the better team, I think the Yankees rotation and bullpen are both better than Boston's and it's not really that close. The offense I'm giving that to the Yankees as well, the Yankees have a deeper farm system as well.

Their lineups can pretty much go head-to-head. Yankees have a better bullpen and I"d probably take the Sox starting rotation over the Yankees' rotation, though they have their question marks too w/ Beckett and Lackey and Dice-K will do this season. I agree, they're closer than people think, though I think the Red Sox have the edge overall. But none of the on-paper stuff matters once the games begin. We'll see who's better this season by who proves it on the field.

Wow you've obviously given this lots and lots of thought and time writing out your thoughts! I think the Yankees might have the better offense, but their outfielders will have to prove they can be consistent each and every game. The big thing to me is who is going to pitch after CC? I actually do have the Yanks advancing all the way to the WS.

in case you evaluate the two communities skills smart, you're able to might desire to assert the 2007 group is greater suited. the variety one obvious assessment could be Bellhorn vs Pedroia. Bellhorn substitute into on fireplace in that sequence along with his homers, yet shall we face it, he's the strike out king. even though it pains me to assert this, yet i think of Drew is in all danger a average greater suited than Trot. (sorry Trot). Orlando Cabrera is a ways greater suited than Lugo at SS for particular. i think of Damon and Coco are a wash with of course Damon having the homers status out, yet Coco and his protection is amazing. YOoook in the initiating is an improve vs Doug Mientkiewicz, generally with the bat and Lowell is in basic terms amazing with the bat and the glove. As pitchers circulate...i think of the it is even. Beckett is greater suited than Pedro, we nonetheless have been given Schilling and Wake, yet i visit of course provide you Lowe over cube-ok superb now. I in basic terms think of the 2004 group have been given warm on the astounding time. getting decrease back from being down by utilising 3 video games placed them on a extreme that gave St. Louis no danger to win. The chemistry of that group of idiots is what have been given them there. They have been unfastened and not intimidated somewhat. this is hoping the 2007 can accomplish what 2004 did and placed across abode the championship to Boston!
