What does this command mean from Revolutionary war?

I watched The Patriot and was curious what it meant when military line stops and prepares to fire. Specifically when they give the order to dress ranks right before they make ready and fire. Does anyone know? Just curious. Thanks!

Dressing the ranks allowed separate units to align into one cohesive force. One unit was the anchor formation, and the rest aligned off of it. This presented a solid front allowing mass fire to strike the enemy formation. A disordered line could not bring a proper "weight of metal" or rate of fire to bear, and also left gaps that the enemy could exploit.

It means to form a straight line, aligning yourself with the man on your right.

this order still exists, kinda, in the form of "Dress Right, Dress/ Ready, Front, Cover." or the USAF's ************ Dress Left Dress
